G+_Michael Heinz
So, stupid question: Are SATA III and SATA II backwards compatible with the original SATA standard? I've got a 6 year old NAS with a drive that's starting to go (monthly health check is starting to report bad sectors) and I'm trying to decide if I should replace the drive or replace the whole unit. G+_Jason Marsh
Short answer: Yes Long(er): If your NAS has Gigabit ethernet insert a new drive into it, as large as the device will handle, and enjoy the upgrade. If your NAS doesn't have Gigabit ethernet, it's time to shop for a new NAS, put a fresh drive in your old one anyways, and set up a NAS-less friend or family member with new-fangled network storage :) You get the new hardware, and your low-tech friend/family will have a "new" toy.
