What I need from a phone is a good maps app, GPS, a good weather app, to be able to make a phone call, and a decent camera. All those I shall use while hiking. No other whistles and bells are necessary.

Haven't got money to burn, and the phone will run on prepay. so...Lumia 640. What do you think?

If the newest Moto G takes an SD card, it would probably be your best bet. Google Maps let's you download for offline navigation and there are probably dozens of other apps that do the same. Lumia probably has a better camera though. Tons of good weather apps. The last couple weeks of All About Android have had a few decent ones listed. I use eWeather HD which will give a 10-day forecast as well as hour-by-hour for the next 24.

If I game, I'm gonna game on the PC. I need a serious machine for the stuff I play, and when I play, I'm at home, with a bigass monitor in front of me. The same thing with video. I may be weird, but I find it ridiculous to watch something on a postage stamp sized screen. So... I never do.

I have a 640 as a backup for when things have gone wrong(swam with my note 4?) and it honestly surprised me. Since then I got a s7 edge which had a small fault. I returned it and the OnePlus 2 became available on Amazon. I took a chance and was VERY surprised. So much so that I now own the OnePlus 3 which was £309 and every bit as good as a £639 phone....so maybe consider a OnePlus 2? Or 3? Even the OnePlus X. Just a thought. If you aren't after a high end then these could probably really surprise you at that price point. I won't be surprised if they cost almost exactly the same to make in the factory. But hey, I may be wrong. Also, like I said, the 640 served me well. No 5GHz is a thing to think about though.

Okay, I did it. From now on, feel free to consider me one of those Windows phone people. I ended up buying a Lumia 650, because fur like 20 euros more I get the dual sim and the option to add a gazillion GB's of storage. The phone looks good, and it feels good in the hand.

Plus, it's Windows 10. I got it on my PC and I like it. Moreover, I can be sure that there will never be a conflict or limitation between the PC and the phone. Stuff will work.
