Lifehacker had an article about phone and laptop batteries (http://bit.ly/1fzL9I4).  #3 says not to leave your device plugged in when fully charged.  Does test exist to support this?  I thought most modern devices had circuitry to eliminate over charging.  If so, what does it matter?  There seems to be as many opinions as there are articles about extending battery life.  I'd like to see something more than just a person's opinion.

If I'm not mistaken, Li-ion batteries would be affected as well. Padre has already told us that it's best not to store our batteries at full charge and I think that applies to charging laptops as well. So often our laptops become consolidated desktops and just stay on the cord all the time.

That said, many laptops have settings to keep the battery only charged to 60% or 80% which would protect it.

I've read all sorts of guides.  But I'm sorry, actual real world results matter more to me then some academic paper.

I've had best life (years with the battery, and between charges ) by staying on charge (more laptop here; tough to keep a cell always plugged in) and running down below 50% (I try to hit 30%).  before recharging.  With the occasional deep discharge.

If my laptop has been on power for a couple weeks, time to exercise the battery.

YMMV
