G+_William Burlingame
I have eight security cameras that record on motion detection. I've been keeping the recordings on a local drive, but I thought it might be better to save them in the cloud. I changed the location of the folder that saves the recordings to Google Drive and I delete recordings of no interest daily. The problem is that Google Drive syncs all the folders with my other computers and because of data caps, I'm concerned about exceeding the cap. I there a way to tell Google drive not to download the videos to my other computers unless I request them?
G+_Steve C
Wait, how do you have enough bandwidth to upload the videos from 8 cameras in the first place? For me just one 5 min. video takes about an hour to upload so you must have quite a backlog!
G+_William Burlingame
Steve C, I have the cameras' resolution set to 640x480 and most of the recordings are less than a half minute and file sizes are rarely as large as 1 MB. My advertised internet service is 105 Mb down and 20 Mb up. Most speedtests exceed the advertised speeds. I just ran the DSL Reports speed test and got 124.6 down and 22.29 up. Monday night a recorded a person near my front door after we had gone to bed. I was an IR image. Reported it to the police and Detective asked me to email the file to him. That video was 12 sec long and the file size was 173 KB. The format is mp4. Ron Reifsnider, thanks, I'll try that.
G+_Jason Marsh
I'd bump the resolution with uplink speed like that, and max it if using motion-triggered logic to decide when to save footage. It's also a good time to get some pepper spray, a taser, and some bean-bag rounds for your 12 gauge. Make the poor bastard soil himself from agony/fear and THEN hand him over to law enforcement. G+_William Burlingame
Jason Marsh, the problem is a 300 GB data cap. I also stream Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc. I've had a couple of warnings from my ISP that I'm at the 90% of the cap level. The closest was 298 GB. G+_Jason Marsh
I get letters once in a while, as well. Never a "warning", though. Hmmm... You need a NAS inside a safe room or other secure location on your property, or at least inside a heavy fire safe. Then you can have a physically secure store for the video evidence IF something were to happen. I'm so glad I live in a semi-rural area now. Living in the city I always had at least a few of what I'd call "unsavory" neighbors. Outside the city limits there are no sidewalks and virtually nobody walking along the street at night. I pray you don't have any trouble, and I hope you're exercising your 2nd Amendment right.
G+_William Burlingame
Jason Marsh, Comcast sends me a warning and telling me that they will automatically charge me $10 and add another 50 GB to the cap. I have been storing my recordings on an internal drive, but I also have a Drobo Transporter, a PogoPlug and a NAS that I keep in my basement and my computers are on the first floor. I may use one of those. I guess it wouldn't be obvious to most intruders that my data is not near my computers. The Transporter and PogoPlug are less trouble to access from a remote location. I was considering cloud storage as the most likely place to have the videos available if a disaster occurs. I live near the center of a town with 200K to 300K population. I don't have unsavory neighbors, but there are those who cruise neighborhoods just looking for easy places to plunder.
G+_Jason Durrance
William, did Ron Reifsnider's solution fix your issue? As Ron already mentioned, just follow these steps: 1. On your desktop, right-click on the Google Drive icon, which will open a small option menu. 2. Left-click on the overflow menu icon (the overflow menu icon looks like 3 vertically stacked dots), which is located at the top-right corner of the option menu. 3. Left-click on "Preferences..." (FYI, you should see a new window open). 4. Under the "Sync options" tab, check the box next to "Only these folders..." 5. Uncheck the box next to each folder you DO NOT want synced to your computer. 6. Click "Apply" 7. You're done with computer #1. Next, you'll need to repeat steps 1 to 6 above on each computer you DO NOT want synced with your CCTV video feeds folder.
G+_William Burlingame
Jason Durrance, when I unchecked the folder of interest, it displayed a message the folder would be deleted from that computer. I would like to see the folder without having the contents loaded onto the computer and the ability to download specific files if I'm interested. That's the way it works on my Android devices. I think I'll try my Drobo Transporter. I can download a specific file if I select it. I think that is referred to as placeholder mode.
