G+_Walter L. McCormick
Hi Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ? Bryan Burnett?, this will be my first year at DEFCON and wanted to know what tech you recommend bringing/not bringing and also how to keep safe during the conference i.e. not getting owned. Thanks so much!
G+_Eddie Foy
My first too. Setting up a latpop just for the event and wiping after is not uncommon. (at the keynote at DerbyCon last year, they said "DerbyCon, where you almost feel safe using WiFi" I just used my cell there, no probs encountered.) Just use good Sec. VPNs, and the like. If staying at Bally's /Paris I'd probably not use hotel Wifi. Go off site. Depends also on what you want access to. If email, use a forwarder to a disposable gmail/yahoo account. and just check that. I don't see a need to do online banking during, so that doesn't come into play. Its 4 days. Can't live without tech for 4 days? if my twitter, or FB or this google account , etc. gets jacked, no biggie; none are tied to me And of course check the wall of sheep! Overall I'd like to think you'd just be rick-rolled over criminal activity. I'm not sure what I'm bringing tech-wise. Doubt much. (but the WiFi pineapple might be fun.) G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
DC/Blackhat is my "Reset" event. I bring all my regular gear, but then they get a clean wipe after the event. I don't turn on my phone while at the venue, and my laptop is only ever connected through a VPN that automatically drops all sessions if the tunnel gets violated. (to stop 6-4)
G+_Walter L. McCormick
Thanks for your tips guys. Eddie Foy? said he might bring a pineapple to the conference. Any other gadgets that might be fun to play with while I am there? SDR, Wireshark etc.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Good question: We'll probably do a quick bit on what we're bringing to the conference. In my bag is: 1. A laptop with wireshark (One that I'm ok connecting to the Defcon network) 2. A USB-Serial adapter 3. A wired cell tethering device. 4. VMs on a stick 5. Soldering Kit 6. A bunch of electric doodads (for the Hardware Hacking Village) 7. Lockpick set And a bunch of other stuff that I'd rather not talk about. :)
G+_Walter L. McCormick
Awesome, thanks so much. Looking forward to seeing you there.
G+_John Mink
I think the short answer is, don't bring anything you don't want hacked (hence the wipe afterwards) and assume all communications are not private. Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ I'm surprised you'd even risk a VPN connection.
G+_Eddie Foy
Remember, these are hackers, NOT criminals.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Actually Eddie Foy ... some of us are criminals. But more to the point, any device brought to the conference is fair game. We all know that going in. :)
