I recently got the zeny SMD rework station and really like it!

For hot air you want paste.  Its expensive and has a shelf life.  Buy small quantities. and keep in fridge.

Thinnest solder is best for general PCB work.  You can always dive more solder in.  I typically use .032"

Try to get the wash-free style of solder.  Rosin is acidic (it does a last second cleaning of the pads/leads/wire/etc.) and should be cleaned off the board when you are done.

all depends.  Check the data sheets for the solder, & the parts for temp and time.

Typically the bigger (more mass) to heat up, the hotter you want it.  The items being soldered will draw heat away from the tip.  With it too low, you will stay on it longer, allowing the heat to migrate through the part. (not a great thing)

I have a  Metcal, no heat option, it just 'knows' what to be at somehow.  But on my older, I'd just start off at about 65% of the dial range.

Its really not that 'critical' 2-3 second on the joint, add solder.  If it doesn't melt with in 1-2 seconds your too low.  (just as a blind guide)
