Hmm... that opens up another can-o-worms... is today's tech a throwaway thing? Certainly there are steam engines and mechanical things (including calculators) that have been built more than a century ago... and still do what they are supposed to. Today's fancy stuff has a lifespan of about six months. So... have we progressed?

Phone only ever 2-3 years. MacBook Pro still same since 2011 still does 3D CAD work and everything I need. Key is to buy quality. What concerns me with apple lately is lack of upgrade path with soldered ram and packaging that is almost impossible to open. My 2011 mac book pro has been upgraded to max 16 gb ram, SSD main drive and remove optical for secondary HD

We have and at the same time we have not progressed, sure a lot things are better more efficient. However now more than ever things are designed to be Awesome and then fail beyond repair before it should. For what that thing is, classic example is keyboards, your dads or grandpaps throw away keyboard does not even compare to the throw away keyboards that come with computer these days... FYI their stuff was not really throw away it was built to be the best it could be... Typing on a IBM Model M now, how many of those where thrown away before their time... How many of the keyboard you get today new that come with a PC will be even useable in 20 years?

Had issue with my 2011 MacBook Pro 17 graphics in 2016 took to local mac service figured I would spend 300-900 fixing but apple stood behind graphics card issue on 5 year old machine spent $0 new logic board and even replaced damaged case. I know say support your local non apple authorized service company easy to work with. Never like Apple Store way to many people and always trying to get to next customer.
