G+_Dave Trautman
Four of the very best programmers I have ever hired were "the layabout good for nothing spotty teenager who plays video-games in his messy bedroom" types. What I learned about these guys is how they played long enough to "beat" a game in only a few hours after it was released. Shortly afterward they realized they could probably make a better game than the ones they were playing. They went out and learned to program so they could build a better game and ended up being paid to write code for the military (yes I hired them for Defense work). They were worth every penny. As a dad to a competitive gamer I've met some of the finest young men (and women) at tournaments and in various family basements as my son learned to play better and better. Today he ranks right up there internationally while still finding the time to get his degree in Engineering. All his travel and accommodation was paid for by winnings from those tournaments. He also learned to travel the world and how to talk to people. He speaks Japanese now. HIs formal presentation skills were second to none. But, he still didn't clean his room. I'll take the mischaracterization with a grin. Many of the young people in his gaming circle are now gainfully employed in healthcare, professional music, engineering, finance, and in technology support. Some of the guys I hired had hippie parents who were all peace and love while they were raising their kids. Just a passing response...
G+_Black Merc
Dave Trautman glad to hear a one in a 10000 success story, meanwhile, the rest are flipping burgers or breaking into peoples homes. Im glad for all that make that dream happen.. But don't expect me to buy a lottery ticket any time soon.
