G+_Johnathan Turner (Refra
So my galaxy s4 seems to be running out of space even if I clear all non essential apps and files off of it. Do you have any advice for cleaning up any stray files that might secretly be eating into my 16gb total space?
G+_Steve C
It's not usually the 16 gb that you run out of but the 2 GB RAM. I had the same problem with a Galaxy S that only had 1GB, it would run out of RAM and have to be rebooted every few days. I had to root it and use Titanium backup to remove all the unnecessary crap that came on it from the factory. You should remove all apps but what you absolutely need and disable the rest that you can't remove. Also turn off Automatic Updates in the Play store and don't do updates except on important apps since each one takes up more memory. You should also install an app management program like Advanced Task Manager that can constantly keep killing all the unwanted apps that keep starting up and running since each one of them takes more memory. G+_Ben Reese
So, I'm going to disagree with Steve in this one. You could be running out of RAM, but the S4 has a lot more capability than the original Galaxy S. I'd recommend installing ES File Explorer and using its SD Card analyzer to find what's eating your space. Android now uses your internal storage as an emulated SD card, so pictures, videos, downloads, etc all get saved there.
G+_Steve C
I never had any problems with the S2 or S3 but you could run out of space if you install tons of unnecessary apps, save lots of videos, music, etc. I agree with running a memory analyzer. G+_Rud Dog
Samsung S4. Just to add a question to expand on "how to". When I take pictures noticed they get stored on the phone not the mem card. Can someone give the steps if there are any for having pictures and video directed to memory card storage?
G+_Ben Reese
It's an option of the camera app. It may be worded as something like internal vs external storage.
G+_Rud Dog
Ben Reese you were for sure correct there is a setting calling out to send pics to device or mem card unfortunately the setting was already on mem card leaving me confused why my unit is sending them to device storage. G+_Rud Dog
Interesting append to my last post decided to toggle the setting mentioned and when I did saw the message; Single shots will be stored to mem card burst mode shots will be stored to device mem. Not sure if this has changed anything but will update shortly
G+_Ben Reese
Makes sense. Burst shots need faster write times, so internal storage is usually used. Videos might do the same, but Class 10 SD should be fast enough for 1080P video. I just store everything internal then move to SD manually, but that takes some work every few weeks.
