I think he's referring to a 3.5mm cable, but I could be wrong.

 

There are a couple apps I've found to do similar from the mic on my bluetooth headset:

You might try one (or both) of these.

If I remember correctly, SoundAbout is an app that will listen to your surroundings and mix the audio into your playback. Use case would be your listening to music with ear buds in and someone walks up behind you and starts talking. Maybe running it while shooting video will force the camera to use that external mic...
