G+_Tracy Delph
Hey guys, I'm looking to buy my first 3d printer. My price point is sub $350. I've watched the KnowHow episode for the MonoPrice Maker Select and the New Matter Mod-t. I like both of these printers but I've seen some posts saying the Mod-t is more of a toy than a good 3D printer. Any recommendations, I'm new to this category but I catch on pretty quick. Thanks in advance...
G+_David Peach
I just got the Maker Select Plus last week. My first printer. Couldn't be happier. I don't know that it is necessarily worth the extra price over the Maker Select. But since it was the newer model and I was given some extra cash, that made it worth it to me. Just realize that 3D printing is not necessarily a science as much as a skill and art. So, whatever printer you get will have a learning curve. G+_Jason Brown
so this suggestion will depend on how much you want to mess with a kit. I just purchased the below listed Anet A8 off of gearbest. It was on sale and is for 12 more hours. YouTube has a lot of information on it and I'm willing to risk it for $200. I'm going into it knowing that I'll have to tinker with it and upgrade somethings right off the bat. Its an option I could regret it but I'm willing to take the chance. gearbest.com - Anet A8 Desktop 3D Printer Prusa i3 DIY Kit-183.57 Online Shopping| GearBest.com
G+_John Nitzh
If you are comfortable with a kit the A8 above is pretty much the cheapest way to get printing. If you aren't comfortable with kit building then I have to recommend the MP Maker select or the MP maker select Mini. I bought a mini as my first printer and it is a very user friendly turn key printer with FABULOUS user support here and on FB.
G+_Jason Brown
The MP Select Mini looks awesome for the price. Has really good reviews. Id like to have both!! Great turn key option.
G+_Riley Plays
The anet a8 is a great kit as long as you dont mind spending a day or so (took me about 12 hours in total im a noob) and if you dont mind constant reajustin
G+_Robert Taylor
I can't speak highly enough of my Monoprice Maker Select V2. It is my first 3d printer and has been quite the learning experience. I have learned quite a bit with this unit and it has yet to let me down except when I do something totally stupid... It is within your budget and a very capable printer. Worthy of your first foray in 3d printing.
G+_John Nitzh
PS. V2 of the maker select Mini is due to start shipping soon with upgrades that address most of the originals weaknesses.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
We're going to talk about this on Monday's show... basically, I love the Mod-t for COMPLETE n00bs. (I got one for my father, and he LOVES it!) -- but if you can learn quickly, get a Monoprice... it's got a heated build platform, wider choice of filament, and decent quality. JUST KNOW... that you'll be spending a lot of time making sure its properly calibrated. (Seriously... don't do the "good enough" method... this matters!) G+_Tracy Delph
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ thanks for the suggestion. With your help and the help from everyone here I'm thinking about either getting the MP Maker Select Plus or the MP Select Mini when it's back in stock. Should be an interesting learning experience. I enjoy your shows by the way, looking forward to Mondays show and thanks for the reply...
G+_Tracy Delph
Thanks for help to everyone here that took time to give me their suggestions. I wouldn't mind buying a kit and putting it together for the experience but I think after looking at the Monoprice Maker Select Plus and the MP Select Mini that I'm going to pick up either one of these. The Mini looks great and the videos I've watched ppl seem to really like it, except the small build area. Found a great deep dive review of the mini if anyone is interested in learning what makes it tick. hackaday.com - MonoPrice Select mini | Search Results | Hackaday
G+_David Peach
Tracy Delph?, like you, I didn't mind buying a kit but was glad to get something that was good enough quality at a price I could afford to pay. That said, I'm now seriously considering printing all the parts I need to build a printer for my office. Not because we need one, but because now that I see how simple (yet amazingly complex in what it does) it is, I want to try building one from scratch.
