I'm just now dipping my toe in the Android development waters and I got scared off by iOS development so I don't really know, but... this seems kinda like a big deal to me.

First, it's a non-iCloud-based option for iOS developers. Whether or not they ever develop for Android.

But if you're going to take that first step, then maybe you'll be more inclined to take that second step for a simultaneous release on both platforms.

Even if it's not simultaneous, if you're a developer who isn't locked into an Apple back end the barrier to entry for a future Android project is much lower.

Or have I misunderstood this article entirely?

You are correct.  This is a big deal.  From what I've heard (as I'm not an iOS developer), dealing with iCloud for backup and sync is pretty awful.

Additionally, this works the other way as well.  Android developers that have shied away from iOS (besides the "I have to have a Mac" hardware requirement) due to the frustrations of iCloud, this would entice them to do further their development.

Joseph Cappellino hit one nail on the head.  Hit it again.  iClud.

All right, snark aside, I only interfaced with it as a Mac and iOS user, and jumped ship back in the day of MobileMe.  iDisk was bad.  Though somehow iPhoto Galleries (deprecated just as photo galleries become a big deal again, G+. Flickr, etc.

Apple's entire push is to "lock in" iOS users, and to extend that lock in on to Mac users.  This leads to terrible software, and services.

As it stands, I wonder if Google could kill iOS by just pulling its APPs?  As an iOS outsider, it seems Google is delivering core functionality to the platform Apple isn't.  Emphasizing that G is platform agnostic.

Which doesn't say Apple couldn't start denying Apps that use Google's Cloud instead of iClud.  That is the Apple way . . . and me a Mac fanboi.
