Would anybody know how to build an out of level sensor with Aurduino and include a warning light ...

My first thought... Halleffect sensor with a magnet hanging on a string centered above it. Tilting the frame on which its mounted in any direction will change the halleffect sensors output. A little bit of testing should give you more than enough resolution to sence 3 degrees off center. A similar design was once used to detect earthquakes.

I wonder if any version of the Star Trek TriCorder included a level sensor?

I wonder of there is any clarification or additional detail about the proposed project available? I imagine that the device would have to be stabilized and then the sensors could have to be "set" so subsequent movement would be detected. Perhaps a seismic activity proximity detector?

I have a digital inclinometer, bought from Sears, that I've had 10+ years. I'd imagine a sensor similar to what runs it would be spot-on for your project. Now, what that is I don't know, but I'm sure someone here knows how electronic levels work. As there's no setup when powering it on, I don't know if it's an accelerometer or gyroscope or something else altogether. Mine displays to the tenth of a degree, so the resolution is moderately fine.

Thanks Guys for your ideas, I didn't think it would be that complex!. Not sure where the Bomb came into it?

Actually, it is for a site project, we had a mini crane turn over and i just wanted to see if I could make a warning device for the operator that alerted him with a light and alarm if the crane was not level up to 3 deg. It seems he can not look at the level bubble in the cab!! By the way i am in Hong Kong

Honestly, a mercury switch to complete a circuit for light/alarm would be fairly simple and small, I'd think. But it would need a good enclosure.

Like Robert Gauld? mentioned, a balance switch could work as well like. /|\. . If the flat plate contacts the area beneath, circuit completes= alert.

I must admit I like the mercury idea best (that's why I mentioned it twice), but levelness is fairly simple to detect, so a microcontroller isn't necessarily necessary.

I feel like that last part needs more words starting with n.
