Passing thought: why the hell have they started with the automobile in this upcoming autonomous brave new world?

If there is something that could be easily made autonomous, then it is the airplane, the train, and maritime shipping. Not the car!

Trains have been moving in this direction for some time in both Europe and Canada. Some of the best are operated in Japan and France.

Aircraft are fully autonomous for flying and landing if conditions warrant.

Shipping is a bit slower to roll over because of the life-cycle of replacement. If ships were maintained the way aircraft are then most ships at sea would be running on auto-pilot as much as intercontinental jets do now.

Near me in my city they are selling autonomous lawn mowers. I am very tempted. My lawn is huge and I am old.

The amount of time in cars commuting is probably part of the reason. The first fully automous cars will be expensive and the folks in the US, who can afford them will see this as a gift. Freeing up the commute time to work or rest.

As for ships it is probably not super urgent, they will still need a crew to help prevent piracy. Fully automous ships would be straight forward to slow and board, assuming that they are programmed to favour human life over speed of delivery. Once slowed unless there is something to protect the cargo the pirates will have time to get to the cargo and choose the best bits to take.
