Hi Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ?, between yourself and us, your family of Kita's, we have amassed a wealth of project and Tech information on these here G+ pages. Do you have a mechanism as the group owner, to perform a backup of this knowledge base? Does Google actually offer tools in which to extract the data to a usable format?

It's been on my mind recently, especially given Google's inclinations to drop products it no longer sees as a viable fit to their portfolio. Researching this didn't return an abundance of useful information (to the level I was seeking) especially from the platform creator themselves. Plenty of options for your Gmail, Photos, Calendar, Documents etc but not so much on the topic of an entire community group's posts. Google Takeout is the application offered for data extraction but can it be used to preserve this group's data?

If you can successfully extract the posts (including the supporting data like links, photos, videos etc) from the group, I'd be happy to investigate a suitable open source db/cms in which to migrate the data for redundancy.

Once we can establish the format of the extracted data, the next step would be checking to see if any of Google's API's allow queries on the G+ data to incrementally update the offline version. (rambling /thinking out loud now... lol)

Any group members who've previously encountered this scenario or similar, your feedback is most welcome.

Cheers.

Damien.

Ben Reese Good to know. It'll allow you to save the text content of the posts but should the platform be deprecated, you'll only have that copy of the text. Any links and/or attachments will not be accessible because they'll be pulling from the G+ servers. I think Google allows you to extract/backup your own data without issue, I'm unclear as to how it manages that process from a community group like this. Does Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ? have permissions to capture and store all the content absolute? Do we, as members get to save our posts only etc. That's what requires clarification. More so, will the data be usable in any other environment... There's a chance it'll be extracted into a mass file full of text with a folder full of photos and videos with no structure whatsoever, making it effectively useless. The platform owner has met there obligations by allowing the data to be saved, however, it's only going to make sense while it's published in their platform.
