I found the same cheap selfie stick w/o the remote and for the $5 it was worth getting just the clamp for the phone. With the 1/4-20 threaded mount, it'll fit any tripod so I can use it for any project I want to hold a phone. I don't take selfies but some other uses:

 

Extend the stick down, point the phone forward & shoot video from a dog's point of view.

 

Shoot video under things; your car, attics, cabinets, to see what's going on.

 

Shoot video/images over the heads of people.

 

Use the stick and attach other stuff to it.
