I'm starting to plan a replacement of my home server/NAS, which is running on HP EX470 MediaSmart Home Server (running WHS v. 1). I'm running out of space on it and it does not support discs larger then 2TB.

I'm thinking about 4-5 bay NAS.

I need it to be able to serve files (all of them can do it:) )

I would like that it would support backup to them like in WHS (backup entire pc and in case of failure you can extract single files or do a bare metal restore) with versioning.

It would be nice if it could stream content to TV with Kodi/Plex or similar.

Any suggestion about which company to choose for NAS? QNAP or Synology?

+1 For a Synology, unless you want to build/upgrade your server and run WHS2011. Honestly, though, Windows 10 has been nothing but a headache because none of the recommended fixes have done anything to allow me to back up to WHS2011.

Last night the spousal unit was bending my ear about her computer not backing up. At least she's concerned about it, right? I'm going to have to find alternative backup software for the Win10 box or just dump Homeserver altogether and replace with a quite capable NAS. The kicker is I have upgraded the memory, processor, or storage each year since I built the WHS2011box and I have a pretty capable machine now. Maybe I can move her to Linux instead ;^)

A coworker had WHS2011, and he was not happy. Regularly complained about missing features which were in the initial WHS.

Now I'm trying to choose between DS916+ and DS1517+.

The 916+ is cheaper and supposedly better transcoding for streaming stuff.

The 1517+ is more expensive (200 euros), but has better expandability (5 drive bays and you can connect two expansion chasis) and has integrated power supply.

The wife is Ok with either of them.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I have her backing up to network location now, on the server. I'd rather WHS2011 do it for the BMR, but the client backup program in Win10 is adequate I suppose. Never used it to recover. Should test....

Edvardas Rimkus The only missing feature I heard anyone speak of was the disk pooling that StableBit's DrivePool brought back.

Go with the 1517+.

Jason Marsh CrashPlan has a "free" option that allows you to backup to another computer on your local network or in a remote location. I've used it with the paid family plan cloud version for several years. This has been more reliable than the WHS system I used to use.
