G+_Ben Yanke
Networking question: Does anyone know of a good GSM to Ethernet modem (something I could hook up to my own router, not a WiFi hotspot that creates it's own network). Obviously I could just buy a hotspot and pick it up with an AP acting as a client, and hook that to my router, but that is obviously less than ideal, and less reliable. G+_Eddie Foy
Whats the goal? GSM back up I-Net connection? You might be able to get a USB > Ethernet to work on an Android phone with a OTG cable. Seen some WiFi adapters work that way. (I had an old SMC router that had a fall back serial port for a dial up modem)
G+_Ben Yanke
It would be a primary net connection, alongside another modem, so I would really like to find some sort of appliance that will just plug with ethernet and just work.?
G+_Eddie Foy
Well if GSM is primary Internet, your ISP should have a solution.
G+_Ben Yanke
I've never seen such a solution from a mobile provider. Only those dinky WiFi hotspots.
G+_Eddie Foy
Madison WI doesn't have good internet? So bad that GSM is a better option? (I do hope you are talking LTE over GSM, if supplying your house.) The (rooted) android phone with Ethernet adapter might be something to investigate.
G+_Ben Yanke
Rural, just outside if madison...yes, LTE was the goal. The other option is 1.5 m dsl
G+_Alan Burbol
You need a router that you can plug a USB modem into. There exist routers that will accept the USB modem in addition to a traditional (cable or DSL) WAN connection for fail over if you need it. G+_Ben Yanke
I already have a very complete setup, that I'm not interested in changing. The android to USB Ethernet could work if nothing else can be found, but really, I need something with Ethernet to go to my existing router
G+_Alan Burbol
Stacked Layered routers? Have the lan port of the USB modem compatible router connected to the WAN port of the current router. This wouldn't be unlike my setup where my DSL modem technically has routing functionality, but I want my own router. ?
G+_Jason Marsh
This has a SIM slot and connects to 4G/LTE. Compatibility with your carrier will have to be verified, as will with any of these sort of devices, whether from Netgear, Cradlepoint, or others. http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-4G-Mobile-Broadband-Router/dp/B00IEYCLLU/ref=pd_sim_sbs_pc_25?ie=UTF8&refRID=0PB73J6E5FCNJYSPMEXT
G+_Jason Marsh
Or perhaps the TP-LINK TL-MR3040 would be more in line with what you're looking for.
G+_Ben Yanke
Thanks all! A few good ideas, and it'll send me in the right direction to look for more too.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
The best in this field is Cradlepoint.
G+_A Alto
I also use the TL-MR3040. You can use it as a wifi AP or cable it to your own switch or router. Inexpensive.
