G+_Ben Yanke
In the past, Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ has mentioned some tools on his home network that he's used, such as nmap scans at regular intervals. I, for one, would LOVE to see an overview of your home network, and more networking things in general.? I just finished setting up a virtualized ubuntu home server to run a few things, so I'd love some cool linux tools (like nmap, for starters) to run on a home network. Another I found for my personal use is SmokePing, which pings places at regular intervals and gives you graphs on what the network connectivity is looking like. G+_Kai Siers
I really like observium for keeping track of the network, check_mk to monitor everything and right now I working on setting up logstash with kibana. A bit overkill for a home network, but I see it as good practise for my job :-).?
G+_Eddie Foy
I don't rely on ping in a windows environment. (i'm always going to the client to turn on IMCP just so I can ping the dang winbox) nmap is nice when utilizing the scripts..(Zenmap if ya like the GUI; it does offer a nicer display of results) OpenVAS or the free version of Nessus (32 IPs) are a good addition too.
