I hoping I could get a recomandation on a laptop. I'm having a hard time finding what I need. I am running 3d modeling programs that require a lot of power. I would like to get a laptop first for field work.

The specks I need are 3+ ghz cpu preferably with as many cores possible. 2 hard drives. 256 solid state and 1 trb minimum. 16 gb of ram with the ablity to upgade to 64gb. must be invidea gpu with 3 to 4 gig of ram and maybe a blue ray drive for easy nonmagnetic back up in the field.

I'm thinking that the acer predator that father robert had on the last show? Acer says that with the frost core It can run continous at the top speed of 3.5. If thats true that will fill the last slot of 3 ghz. some reviews said the frost core didnt make much of diffence?

Is there anything else I should look at?

I so enjoy this show and all the knowledge I get weekly!

Thanks

Budget unknown..

Think they have laptops with desktop CPU and/or GPU coming out,

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/09/nvidia-crams-desktop-gtx-980-gpu-into-monster-17-inch-notebooks/

Something like this wth up to 64GB ram and desktop cpu might also do.

Also depends on your 3D program if it takes advantage of quadro's.. then you might want to look into workstation types.

Thanks Steve, but I need both hdd contained in the machine. I have enough to remember when on the road. And pix4d is made to play nice with invidia gpus the best. Don't think I can get that much power out of a Macbook? And the software for Mac is in beta. Can't trust my job on that.

Yeah, that Predator is probably what you need and is in the price range. Almost seems like you got your required specs list from that system lol.

$2100 on Newegg (http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16834315184&nm_mc) ?

I'm sure it's similarly priced at other retailers. If the HDD isn't big enough, that's always easy to upgrade later. You might also be able to get a lower model and upgrade drives/RAM for cheaper than the factory upgraded price. The laptop specs say it's a 2.6 GHz, but the processor specs say that's just the base and it will peak at 3.5+.

Thanks Ben. Thats the way it's starting to look. I was going to get the 256 hdd model for $1888. Gives me 1 gig more of gpu memory and a blue ray drive for $388 more. I can bump the 16 gig of ram later to 32 or 64. A acer rep said I can get 3.5 ghz out of it constantly if the frost core add on fan is in. Not sure I believe it though. Do most gaming laptops not have a touch screen?

thanks for all the great input! still not decieded. Im leaning toward asus ROG G752VYDH72. It has most of what i need. I will get a more powerful desktop soon, but i feel the first machine should be a laptop. so if needed i can do field work if needed. but at 10 pound and 17.3 makes me a little nervous.

I was burned early on with a non name brand machine so i feel more comfortable sticking to a company name i reconize. I want to find it at amazon or best buy to take advantage of the 12 intrest free.
