G+_Manuel Martens
i'm running the latest version of ddwrt (the vpn build) on my router. But I can't get it to work. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.....
G+_Manuel Martens
the vpn itself I mean. The rest works perfectly.
G+_Ben Reese
What VPN type? What are you connecting from/to?
G+_Manuel Martens
i'm trying pptp. I know it's unsafe, so I will switch to openvpn later on. I'm trying to connect from an open hotspot in a café to my home network.
G+_Ben Reese
It's possible that the café has outgoing PPTP blocked also possible that your ISP has inbound PPTP blocked. Is your DD-WRT router connected directly to a modem? Have you been able to connect from other networks? On Sprint I can connect to PPTP from 3g but not LTE... A bit frustrating. G+_Manuel Martens
I have checked it from a friends house. So that's not it. My isp is also not the problem because my uncle has the same isp and his vpn works fine. I can't ask him because he uses an asus router with stock firmware. My ddwrt is directly connected to a modem yes. I haven't been able to connect from any network. I tried wifi at the café, at my friends house, and 3g with my iphone 6. G+_Manuel Martens
although I should add that my uncle uses openvpn and not pptp.
G+_Ben Yanke
^that could be your problem... Try the openvpn setup with your ISP.
G+_Ben Reese
Who's the ISP, if you don't mind me asking? I've used PPTP with Time Warner and with Century Link (DSL).
G+_Ben Yanke
Anyone tried this on frontier DSL?
G+_Ben Yanke
I tried once (and gave up quickly) to set it up once.
G+_Ben Reese
If it helps, here are my settings for PPTP: https://picasaweb.google.com/m/zoom?uname=115592421248197200098&aid=6069904796532252657&id=6136649983480743538&viewportWidth=320&viewportHeight=416 One of my routers is on .1, the other is on .2, and VPN is on .3. I've read that some have to setup port forwarding (1723) as well to get it to work.
G+_Manuel Martens
i'll try. I'm from Belgium. My isp is called Telenet.
G+_Ben Reese
Oh, well you're on your own then lol.
G+_Ben Reese
Really, though... You might try another port if your devices will let you. You might also try a outbound PPTP connection to something like ProXPN (might need to enable PPTP pass through and/or disable your PPTP server). G+_Ben Reese
Might also verify that your DD-WRT router has your public IP as the WAN address. I kinda hate throwing troubleshooting tips out there since you probably already know what you're doing and have tried most of them ?
G+_Manuel Martens
pptp passthrough is enabled. the public ip is the wan address :/. You don't have to hate it, because I might have overlooked something basic.
G+_Ben Reese
Have you tried connecting from inside your home network? I was able to connect to mine using both the internal and external IP.
G+_Manuel Martens
It doesn't even work from inside my home network.

G+_Manuel Martens
Seriously? :-) Because I haven't got a clue :-D.
G+_Ben Reese
Well, now you know it's on your router and not your ISP. Because it's on your router, it's something you can change. I would try disabling PPTP pass through, verifying the IP ranges chosen for your setup, and verifying the UN/PW list (case sensitive on both I believe). G+_Manuel Martens
un/pw list has the correct formatting, the ip ranges are correct. why would i disable ppth pass through?
G+_Ben Reese
IDK. Just something else to try lol. I actually had some issues with mine a while back and read somewhere that an outgoing PPTP connection may not work if you have a server setup on your router. I was looking because I was having a problem connecting to another PPTP server. Disabling the server on my network and enabling pass-through allows the outbound connection to work.
