G+_Francis Kindred
Really enjoyed the security camera show. Just a couple of questions Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ 1. Do you have any recommendations for an outdoor camera instead of an indoor one same quality. 2. You recommended the Synology DS416J, thoughts on the DS216J. Looks like only difference are the bays but you mentioned not to consider the 2 bay ones on the show is this correct? Thanks again Francis
G+_Jason Perry
I am pretty sure he mentioned them as an affordable option. The DSM operating system is a great piece of software. Combine DSM with the redundancy of a NAS and you have a platform to build all kinds of things.
G+_Francis Kindred
Jason Perry Yah I agree but he did mention on the last KH when Bryan Burnett asked about the 2 bay options he said to avoid them. Although I think Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ meant the lower memory 2 bay ones.
G+_Jason Perry
Sorry I missread your comment. I have a 2 bay Synology and I love and regret it. It's redundant and DSM is great but I am stuck at 2 bays. My NAS doesn't have the option to add an expansion to it so I am maxed out.
G+_Jason Perry
Personally I haven't had any issues with memory, just drive size.
G+_Francis Kindred
Jason Perry What model do you have? Did you use the surveillance feature built into DSM.
G+_Jason Perry
If I remember correctly it's the DS214play. It's an upgraded version of the value line geared at syncing flash drives and streaming media. Surveillance is currently it's biggest function. G+_Francis Kindred
Jason Perry i think the "play" line is media focused as well. It probably has 1 gig of memory. I was thinking of getting the DS216j although looks like I cant use it for anything else but the surveillance would you agree? It only has half a gig of memory. Also do you mind to share what camera you used, i'm guessing you have outdoor one?
G+_Jason Perry
It is media centred. I can take my SD cards from my DSLR and camcorder and sync them and stream everything to my devices. I should also add I really don't stream video from it. The majority of my viewing content comes from online sources, not the expected result when I bought it. I also remember looking at the specs at one point and doubting it could transcoding for a whole home setup. No outdoor cameras, just inside. Eventually I will have an outdoor camera or two. I am using TrendNet PoE cameras, mine are old but I have no reason to upgrade them. I really don't think you know what you are going to use your NAS for till you have been using it for awhile. My main reason for getting it was to save home videos, backup and to use as a DVR came later. I find myself using Synology's office app for simple things as I hate the cloud. I hope to see an android app in the office future
G+_Francis Kindred
Jason Perry My original plan as well was backup for videos and pictures but because of the show I'm really leaning towards using it also for surveillance. I dont see myself using it as a plex media server, but curious if the J-Series is sufficient to do the surveillance and the backup of photos. Your model I believe has 1 gig unfortunately the J is only half that. I'm thinking if I need the next spec bump to satisfy the surveillance and backup of photos/data. If you were to get one now given what you learned from using your existing. Sounds like your leaning towards the 4 bay in the same model line correct? G+_Jason Perry
I would go for the biggest one I could afford. Mine is built cheaply, I wouldn't want it to fall. I would love a ds1515 or something I could add expansion units to
G+_Francis Kindred
Jason Perry Another silly question, was there any reason you went with the DS213Play vs the DS213. I'm guessing the Play model is the better version right. Now I'm considering if I should just jump from the DS216 or DS216Play from the DS216J. G+_Jason Perry
Better specs than the ds216. More memory and a faster processor so it can handle media streaming. There is also a nifty sync button I put my SD card in the front press the button and all the files show up in the sync folder in the NAS
G+_Jason Perry
David Grisco?, If you are looking for a good recommendation from me you are out of luck. Mine were reasonably priced at the time, and that was 5 years ago. They met the specs I wanted and didn't break the bank. Told myself I will upgrade but haven't found the reason to. G+_Francis Kindred
Jason Perry found this link synology.com - Performance - Products | Synology Inc. from the synology forums. Basically its mentioning the DS216 is better than the DS216play. On specs Play is better but I guess it still comes down to what you need it for. G+_Jason Perry
Just realized I went from having a DS214play (which I have) at the beginning of this thread to a DS214play (which I don't have) a few comments ago.
G+_Jason Perry
I would love to see a quantifiable comparison. I know the DS214play has a dual core intel atom processor clocked at 1.6GHz. The ds216play has a 32bit arm processor clocked at 1.5GHz

G+_Francis Kindred
Jason Perry I'm now interested on the ds216play after doing my readings and chatting with you. You mentioned for your ds214play you use it for media but you did mention you also use it for surveillance. My guess is you have no issues in using both services at same time correct? G+_Jason Perry
No issues, I am not a heavy user, I only really use it for home videos media wise.
G+_Francis Kindred
+Jason Perry Kinda found out that it cant transcode if I use plex server. Might be overkill now if I just use it for storage however if I use it for storage and surveillance station might not be that bad.
G+_Francis Kindred
+Jason Perry just wanted to let you know I got my ds216play hooked up. So far seamless setup and really enjoying it. Only thing negative was I thought i could put docker on it. Didnt know there was a limitation and it only works on specific models.
