G+_Francis Kindred
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ Really liking the network episodes and learning so much. My network has never been the same :) On the episode when you recommended switches, is there any reason you didnt recommend some of the Ubiquiti switches, i know some of us KITAs use the Edgerouter x that Steve G. recommended I figure stick with the same manufacturer. I'm currently looking for a poe switch myself and now torn between ubiquiti and the recommendations you provided. Thoughts?
G+_Rud Dog
Be careful Francis, I picked up their cameras and their voltage over the POE is proprietary, see if that affects other products you might add to your network.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Yeah, Ubiquity's great is great for the price, but you have to be careful using PoE with them because some of their great uses the older 24v instead of the current 48v standard. G+_Francis Kindred
Thanks Rud Dog Travis Hershberger Do you guys currently use padres recommendation?
G+_Carlos Bedia
Check a devices poe mode a or b determines what pins it expects power on.
G+_Golden Retriever
If you look up POE you will find there are multiple standards.
G+_Francis Kindred
thanks guys so as long as it follows the standard I should be good. I see the ubiquiti switch does say that it supports AF so I should be good.
G+_Francis Kindred
Just wanted to follow up if you guys currently use the netgear switches that padre recommended. I currently have a ubiquiti erx router. Not sure if the price jump on the ubiquiti switches are really worth it.
G+_Golden Retriever
Price jump? Edgerouter X?
G+_Travis Hershberger
I've got an ER-POE at the house, and I'd recommend an ER-X before anything else. Even the Synology they've been raving about on the show.
G+_Francis Kindred
Tod Sage price jump from netgear switches vs ubiquiti unif switches. I'm still undecided :( Hoping to get from netgear or ubiquiti switches and why they decided on one or the other.
G+_Francis Kindred
Travis Hershberger yes i love the er-x i guess given your situation you dont need a switch.
G+_Golden Retriever
I'm a but confused by the switch terminology, while the edge router X is primarily a router, it is also a switch and a very capable one at that, every port in it is a hardware unique interface with full switching capabilities. Francis Kindred am I missing somthing?
G+_Travis Hershberger
Francis Kindred I do have an 8 port gb switch in addition to the ER-X. The ER-X had 5 ports that can be used in in switch or routinh modes, so you should still have 3 available ports even after accounting for one of there access points. The combination of an ER-X and UAP-AC-Lite is cheaper than most any all in one device that can even think about the features and stability of Ubiquity's equipment... Besides maybe Microtik, but I haven't got ahold of any Microtik stuff to try out yet.
G+_Francis Kindred
Travis Hershberger What 8 port switch did you get? Padres recommendation or did you stick with ubiquiti.
G+_Francis Kindred
Tod Sage I'm currently using injectors for my poe cameras and now in the market for poe switches. Currently undecided on the 2 potential poe brands of switches the netgear or ubiquiti. Unfortunately the erx only has one poe passthru port. Moreover, I'm looking for more control on my networks so I like the manage switches because it gives me the ability to use vlans.
G+_Golden Retriever
Francis Kindred one thing I might point out that I've had a lot of trouble with POE cameras in both industrial and outside locations due to corrosion of RJ45 connectors, if you're dead set on power over ethernet, do yourself a favor and buy a bottle of stablant 22 it's expensive but will prevent the need for a ladder to reseat the connection, or use traditional f type coax cable for your cameras with media converters as they have an O-ring that seals the connection from the environment. By the way if you have remote network closets or raftered networking equipment that is hard to get to I used the stable at 22 on all ethernet Connections in routers switches and at the end devices. amazon.com - Amazon.com: Stabilant 22, 5ml Kit Makes 30ml of 22A - 22: Everything Else

G+_Travis Hershberger
Francis Kindred I think it's a Netgear. Just a switch, no management on it. I do really like the managed switches available today, but most people/places won't need any of those features.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Francis Kindred It's an old generic thing, I don't even remember the brand. It does the job for the entertainment center.
