G+_Francis Kindred
Hi Kitas, Because of Amazon prime there is a sale of WD Red and WD Purple. I currently have WD blues on my Synology NAS. Now I use my NAS for surveillance and also for file storage. I'm undecided now if I should get 2 Reds or 2 Purples. What do you guys think? G+_John Mink
So my understanding (mostly from WD promotional & forums) is that the selling point of the Purple is that they have multiple heads, allowing them to continuously write multiple streams... as you'd get from having multiple video cameras. So if you plan on having a bunch of cameras all writing constantly to the NAS (eg: keep the last 24 hours of footage) then go Purple. If you have 2 cameras that are not writing constantly, go Red. Because my understanding is that Purple has all the same NAS stuff that Red has.
G+_Ben Reese
I'd love a link to the WD Red drives on sale too. What I'm seeing still lists the 3TB at $109 - the same price as Microcenter.

G+_Akira Yamanita
I don't know if this is still the case, but I had read that the "AV" models (now the Purple line) could write bad data in some circumstances. This is because in surveillance and other DVR applications, a bad frame is much better than filling up buffers and/or slowing down the system with numerous retries, which can lead to additional lost frames. The Purple line does have NAS features and is supported in many NAS enclosures, but the possibility that it could throw away data would make me hesitant to use one for anything but DVR type applications. G+_Peter Hanse
I would go red. Not sure what we have now but know it is not purple. We have 8 cameras and never had issue with saturating write speed. We do keep all on motion only record to minimize footage to review and file size.
G+_Francis Kindred
The sale is from the canadian site. So looks like I cant go wrong with red then. The synology surveillance system always writes because it has the ability to record before an event occurs and it can only do this by writing it to a temp block first.
