So my understanding (mostly from WD promotional & forums) is that the selling point of the Purple is that they have multiple heads, allowing them to continuously write multiple streams... as you'd get from having multiple video cameras.

So if you plan on having a bunch of cameras all writing constantly to the NAS (eg: keep the last 24 hours of footage) then go Purple.

If you have 2 cameras that are not writing constantly, go Red.

Because my understanding is that Purple has all the same NAS stuff that Red has.

I don't know if this is still the case, but I had read that the "AV" models (now the Purple line) could write bad data in some circumstances. This is because in surveillance and other DVR applications, a bad frame is much better than filling up buffers and/or slowing down the system with numerous retries, which can lead to additional lost frames. The Purple line does have NAS features and is supported in many NAS enclosures, but the possibility that it could throw away data would make me hesitant to use one for anything but DVR type applications.
