G+_Vernon Vincent
Anyone know how to do an external graphics card? I'm seriously looking at the crop of all-on-ones out there (Dell XPS 18, for example) for mobility (and because I need a larger screen for eyesight reasons) but want something that I can do some gaming with. I really don't want two machines (desktop and laptop/tablet) - hence the idea of having an external graphics card/device that I can hook up via USB3 and use for more serious gaming at home. G+_Steve C
Can't you just plug in a large external monitor?
G+_Vernon Vincent
Not if I want the benefits of a good graphics card for game play.
G+_Ryan Grange
I doubt even USB3 has the bandwidth for gamer level video speeds. If your laptop has a mini-PCIe slot, you can try to put together the device described here: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5846&review=how+to+upgrade+laptop+graphics+notebook
G+_Vernon Vincent
That would be a viable option for a laptop, but not so much for an all-on-one. That said - I'm not set on doing an AIO - I just like the Dell XPS 18. Sounds like the short answer is that you need a PCIExpress slot (or a Thunderbolt port) on a machine if you want to do external graphics .
G+_Ryan Grange
My mistake. I was under the impression you were talking about a laptop because I believe some all-in-one's contain an expansion slot. (Usually on a small riser.)
