G+_Russell Heimlich
T-Mobile's giving out 802.11ac routers http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/11/t-mobile-personal-cellspot/ Think you could flash DD-WRT on it? I would be interested in this if it also serves as a gigabit hub as I'm in need of a new router.
G+_Taylor Graham
Awesome tip. Its an asus router, and i believe the non-branded model supports ddwrt. I just talked to tmobile and they said the routers will be available on the 17th. I'll try installing ddwrt on mine right when i get it. $25 bucks is nothing, even if i managed to brick it, it wouldn't be a big deal.
G+_Russell Heimlich
Sweet. I might pick one up too. It’s got 4 gigabit ports too right?
G+_Taylor Graham
Yep. Im assuming its this http://www.amazon.com/RT-AC68U-Wireless-AC1900-Dual-Band-Gigabit-Router/dp/B00FB45SI4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1410549618&sr=8-2&keywords=asus+router+acAsus' routers are normally super easy to flash. They have a recovery console that you could probably access no matter what they have running on top. I doubt tmobile could have done anything to prevent a flash. Hopefully they'll actually be giving these out without much fuss. Seems almost too good to be true.. A $200 router for $25..

G+_Russell Heimlich
These are for sale today. I decided to buy one outright rather than get a free one since I want to flash the firmware and if they ever wanted it back I would be screwed. You can use the promo code RMNOTCLASS30 for 30% off so the $99 router drops down to $69. Still a good deal for such an awesome router.
G+_Taylor Graham
If they ever wanted it back, you could just tell them that you broke it. It would still only cost your $25 mate, thats why there is a deposit. Its not like they could check (especially if you flash it). I just talked to them today about it. Should be ordering mine tonight!
G+_Russell Heimlich
Yea I guess you're right. I've been scouring forums for more details on custom firmware like this http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=19435
G+_Taylor Graham
I saw a post about some users running tomato on this router. I assume ddwrt runs on it, but i havent had time to check. Almost all of asus routers support ddwrt. Asus has a pretty great flash tool that should allow you to flash the router no matter what kind of crazy firmware modifications t-mobile has made, so im not too worried. Even if i cant flash it, its still an AC router. Ill give it to someone.
G+_Russell Heimlich
Found the download page for the original firmware http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=11&s=2&m=TM-AC1900&os=&hashedid=n%2fa
G+_Taylor Graham
Just a bump on this, i ordered mine today. They actually gave it to me with no deposit! They would only give me one however, and they wouldnt give me the router and a femtocell, only one or the other. I asked them about damages, and they said if didnt return the router if i were to terminate my service, it would cost $99, and if i broke the router it would be $25. So if for some reason you cant flash the stock firmware to your new tmo router, you should save some money, pour some water on it, and send it back to tmo. :]
