G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
3D printer question... narrowed my choice to the MonoPrice Maker Select series. For anyone that owns either the V2 or the Select Plus... I see that there are tons of mods that are more-or-less required for the V2. Is it worth it to spend the $80 more for the Plus? Are there any "required" mods for the Plus? I'm ready to order as soon as tomorrow... unless there is a better choice in the sub-$400 range (and yea, I know what I'm going to get in that range...). Thanks everyone!!!
G+_David Peach
I have the Plus. I don't know about required mods, but I did a Z-axis stabilization mod. For me it was more about having a project to throw myself into to see how it all worked as opposed to it being something I had to do to get a quality print. I don't know that the extra $80 is necessary, but I'm pleased with the printer I have. I probably would have gotten the V2 if I hadn't been gifted some unexpected money. G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Sometimes being gifted is a good thing... :) Thanks for the reply. I think I'm going to get the Plus anyway. i saw the mods on Thingiverse and it shouldn't be that bad.
G+_Matt Koglin
Ken, please let us know about your experience! I'm in the market for a printer in the same price range.
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Ok, I will... The reason for getting one in the first place is that I am a computer tech for a school department, and we have 2 Makerbots and 2 Soliddoodle printers and they all print like (insert favorite 4-letter word here...). Been using them for a while and they just get worse, so I'm looking for my own. I'm probably going to order it tomorrow (4/21) so I'll report back when I get it. G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
I've already been scouring the 'net for tips/mods... and the biggest ones are: stabilizing the Z-axis; making the filament holder bigger by printing a bigger one (the one included is way small for bigger spools); making sure that all of the screw wires on the underside of the printer are tight, sometimes they get loose in shipping... G+_Joseph Politi
First mod to do on the MP MS v2 is the Mosfet mod. Safety first, quality second. Check out this site for the info on it. 3dprinterwiki.info - Wanhao Duplicator i3 You can also look at this site for some guidance on mods too. https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/5g491r/start_here_some_helpadvice_for_all_the_new/
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Joseph Politi Funny, read up on the MOSFET mod earlier today. Already in my cart on Amazon. Just can't seem to find a proper wiring diagram. I know it's easy to set up, just need to do it right. Any links on proper wiring?
G+_Joseph Politi
I have it on my computer. I'll put it up later for you.

G+_Joseph Politi
there is a very small + on the mosfet for the white control connection to the melzi board. The rest of the wires are easy to see
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Thanks!!! :) I'm ordering the MOSFET now...
G+_David Peach
Is the MOSFET mod needed on the Maker Select Plus? I was under the impression that it was not a problem on that board. I don't remember why, but I think it had to do with the Plus using a 24V power supply and the Maker Select v1 or v2 had a 12V supply.
G+_Joseph Politi
I don't believe it's a problem on the plus.
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Ugh...thought I read somewhere that it should be done for the Plus as well. My Plus arrives tomorrow, and I already ordered the parts for the MOSFET mod. Maybe I'll just do it anyway... wouldn't hurt, right?
G+_Joseph Politi
Ken Jancef sorry. I was wrong. It still is a problem on the plus. Just not as bad as the MP MS V2.
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
No worries... I would have done it anyway since I ordered the parts (not many parts, but still...). And it's easy enough to do. Better to be safe than sorry..
G+_Joseph Politi
Completely agree. I did my mosfet right after my first test print.
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
I'll have to wait a bit longer... printer arrives tomorrow (Tuesday), MSFET and wire arrives Friday... but it's all good... :)
G+_David Peach
Sounds like I might could use this mod as well. Thanks for bringing it up. While I'm at it, I am going to work on converting the 24V out to 12V for an LED light strip I have on my printer. Currently I have a separate 12V power supply running to my lights. Would like to run the lights off the main power supply since it is already running anyway.
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Could you not use something like a Pololu step-down converter? I use them in some of my quads... would it work on a 3D printer?
G+_David Peach
Good suggestion +Ken Jancef?. I have a step down converter. I was thinking that was overkill, but then making my own with a regulator and the heat dissipation sounded like too much work. When I get my MOSFET board in this weekend I will also pop in the step down converter to give me 12V inside my printer.
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ Thanks for taking my question on the show!! And even though you paused a bit... YOU PRONOUNCED MY NAME RIGHT! lol (it's the little things...) I ended up getting the Plus, and I've done about 7-8 prints and it's been flawless. Using Hatchbox Black PLA for now, and it's great. Haven't done ABS yet, might wait, so I can get the metal hotend and do the heat bed MOSFET mod.
G+_Joseph Politi
ABS will need an enclosure. It's very sensitive to temperature variation. You can just use a cardboard box for a temporary enclosure but if you want a more permanent one google the IKEA Lack enclose for it. Also the real world difference from the MP MS v2 vs the plus model is the touch screen on the controller. If you want have good looking prints you aren't printing fast on these printers. I'm usually printing at 60. The faster you go the more vibration you get and that quickly shows up in the prints.
