Thanks Phillip, I had forgotten it is under the Apache license. There has been a little controversy about companies adopting that license because it has less restrictions on source code approvals.

 

To Ned's point: I am not so sure there are not a lot of Android developers working outside of the Google mothership. I suspect we are seeing some developments under the hood which are not yet exploited by Android Apps. But the information should be somewhere.

 

I see where it is possible to do the marketing layer without affecting the code layer. Red Hat is good at this as well. But the wheels are close enough to the edge to make me pay attention. The release name is definitely Kit Kat and the marketing is visually referencing Android's Logo but that's about as far as it should go. History will tell us if any funds were involved, but I feel money is not the issue at all.

 

As to whether Leo knows something I think I might remind the group he has a studio full of geeks behind the scenes with pretty good chops in FOSS. They probably spent the good part of an hour examining the announcement and coming to some of their own conclusions – and this got reflected in Leo's poor attempt to editorialize on it.
