G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Another drone build... in the “Tiny Whoop” class. 95mm 3D printed frame, 8.5mm motors, and of course FPV. And for such a tiny thing... it MOVES! A little too fast for me, but great to learn with. And a pretty easy build...

G+_John D. Hawkins
Is something like this a pretty advanced build? I have yet to actually do a Maker Project of my own.
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
John D. Hawkins Not really. The frame is 3D printed. The flight controller was maybe $11, and the receiver was, I think, less than $10. I did pay $27 for the motors, but that's because I have 2 smaller Tiny Whoops, and I get my motors from a place that specializes in small quad motors. The hardest part is the soldering. Since the parts are small, the solder spaces are pretty tight. And the motor wires being thin doesn't help. And as I said earlier, this thing is FAST. I ordered 5 sets of props just in case. I'm not used to something this fast, but it's great fun to fly. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask... if you're going to build it I can give you links to what I bought. G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
One note: The black pieces surrounding the motors are motor mounts, and he suggests printing in NinjaFlex, which I did. If you can't print in NinjaFlex, he has them for sale on his website for, I believe, $5.
G+_John D. Hawkins
Sweet! Thanks for the info. Do you have printer suggestion?
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
John D. Hawkins I think I just did 100% infill, being that it would be stronger for the way I fly (crash)... the one problem I had was that in front, where the camera is, the mount extends up on both sides to fit the camera in between. Well I tried 3 different slicer programs, and for some reason those side pieces print so weak that they just snap off. You can probably see that in my picture... It’s ok, because there’s enough of that mount left that the camera fits in perfectly anyway. Hope that made sense... ?
G+_David Peach
What radio are you using? That's what is stopping me from getting into quads. I know I can build a fun quad for $50. But I don't know if buying a $70 radio is good enough or if I should be looking at the $200 units.
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
David Peach I use a Taranis X9D. I got it a few years ago. It’s great because it hold up to 32 profiles. So I can use it for my Whoops, all the way up to my 250 build. I know it’s expensive, but it was worth it for me. There are cheaper Taranis models out there now, but I guess it comes down to how many quads you think you’ll have. Go with either Spektrum of FrSky. On all of the quad forums I participate in, it seems that the most problems are with Spektrum, so not sure why it would have an advantage over FrSky. I knew I’d get sucked into quads, that’s why I got the Taranis.
G+_David Peach
Ken Jancef I tend to get pulled into hobbies like this and spend a lot of money for something that gets replaced by another hobby in 2 years. Trying to manage how deeply involved I get.
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
David Peach oh I hear you... I can build WAY better than I can fly, but I’m still all-in on quads. That’s why I invested in the Taranis X9D. They just came out with a cheaper one, I think it’s QX7, but don’t quote me on that, I’m on the road and can’t research. My buying point is having multiple profiles.
G+_David Peach
What I really want is a friend to buy all the parts and let me build it for them. Let me fly for a couple of days and then hand it over. I get so much joy in the building process for projects like this. Taking the time to get skilled at flying would never happen. G+_David Peach
Ken Jancef, you sent me down a rabbit hole of radio research. The Q X7 seems to hit the sweet spot of all the features you need, flexibility, and price. I've looked at other radios and wonder if I would regret a cheaper purchase. From what I've read, I probably would never outgrow the X7. Now, will I buy one and get started? I still don't know.
G+_Shooter_FPV (Shooter_FP
Well I’m glad you’re thinking about it first. I do like my X9D though...
