Hi, I was transferring concert videos of my late grandmother Helen Armstrong  , who was a concert violinist and I came across VHS tapes in ADAT format from 1993 which I believe is music. Is there anyway to transfer the data off of the ADAT format VHS tapes? Or, do I need to hire someone who's a professional audio engineer?

You need an ADAT machine and interface for a computer. The ADAT machines I am familiar with are made by Alesis and ran 8 tracks. There may be some audio recording studios or companies that still have them in their possession, but I would not wait too much longer to get the tape transferred. A quick look on the internet shows that these machines are still available, but I would suggest having someone do the transfer for you if you feel the tape may be valuable. The tape used should be a SVHS tape which you would find a logo on the tape door. You can not make a copy or transfer from a SVHS or QuasiVHS video playback deck. Once it is transferred into a file on a computer, you could have them mix it down to a 2 track mp3 so you can determine if you want them to master it for you, if it is not already mastered. You may want to go to the Alesis.com website and check with the community there- more than likely you will have your best chances there of finding someone to help you out.
