G+_Brenden Howser
Hi, what Linux Distro does everyone here recommend and also use? Also, can you actually install Steam on Linux and use Linux like Windows now? I personally like Elementary OS because its a good UI and has nice preinstalled programs. G+_Will O'Meara
I recommend Linux Mint or Peppermint for a lighter option, all the support of Ubuntu without unity. Steam can be installed on any version of Linux with varying work involved, Debian based distros have it the easiest, but not all games are available. You can install the windows version of steam through wine (including most windows games)and games will run with varying levels of stability, zorin os is a good choice for easily installing windows software. But I use Linux exclusively unless I am playing a few choice games which I have a small windows installation for or if I'm on my tablet cause there is still not a viable Linux tablet os for x86 processors other than android in my opinion.? G+_Steve C
I use Mint also and if you change the desktop picture and put the program's icons on the screen it looks exactly like Windows 7! It doesn't work like Windows though and has a long way to go before it will be ready for Prime Time! I mostly use Windows 7, 8.1 or 10 and just keep Linux on hand for special uses since it's not suitable for every day use. While there are Linux versions of a lot of popular programs like Office, VLC, etc. there are no versions of smaller less popular or niche programs. Most programs are hard to install too unless there is a Mint version in it's store. There's no support for most USB devices either. Most of the time when I plug in a USB device it just doesn't see it at all. It supports my printer, thumb drive and webcam but doesn't recognize my Logitech USB headset, SDR radio or anything else that's not main stream enough or used by enough computer geeks for them to write drivers for it. G+_Travis Hershberger
For a desktop Mint is just the way to go, works with everything other than SilverLight out of the box, and that can be enabled easily enough. If we switch to the server world I stick with CentOS for application servers and Debian for virtualization hosts (KVM and OpenVZ.)
G+_Tom Nardi
Yeah, Mint probably best for the beginner.
