G+_Hagos Rush
So, some of you may remember that I was looking to purchase a new NAS last week. If you are not, well I was. So I live in Long Island, NY. We had a storm. I had a battery backup. The power flickered on/off numerous times (expected behaviour). My NAS effectively has s**t the bucket because instead of oh I don't know protecting my NAS from the on/off switching the APC battery backup didn't even kick in. Now I have 12TB of media possibly gone down the drain. I am unable to get to the web interface at all. My drives are in Raid 5. 3 and a spare. Before some of you ask, this is my only backup. I was attempting to purchase a new NAS that would have been the main and used the Lacie I currently own as a redundant backup. But alas... Here is what I need: 1. Affordable but good battery backup that is able to handle the power that a NAS requires 2. If I get another NAS and drop the drives in...Am I up a creek? Or is there hope? 3. Is there a way to manually connect to the drive (not networked)?
G+_Rickbearcat
If there is anything that can help you get your data off of the drives it would be Spinrite / https://www.grc.com/intro.htm. grc.com - Home of Gibson Research Corporation
G+_Hagos Rush
Rickbearcat This drive configuration is in Raid 5. I don't know if this will work for me.
G+_Rickbearcat
You don't have anything to lose here except your data, sarcastically speaking. Send Steve an e-mail explaining your situation and or google your problem and Spinrite and see what you can turn up. Good luck.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Does the LaCie have an auto-rebuild feature? In some of the lesser NAS, the interface is unavailable while rebuilding.
G+_Hagos Rush
Rickbearcat haha thats fair. I actually already sent an email prior to replying to your original comment. I was just asking because I actually don't know.
G+_Bruno Cadorin
Have you checked the power supply. Do the disks spin up. If it's a failed PS, a replacement should bring the drives up. If the controller hasn't failed, your RAID should be intact. The RAID config is usually stored on the controller, if you replace the controller, the array config will be lost. Same if you plug the drives into a new NAS. In RAID 5 the data is spread across multiple drives. The controller can recreated the data on a failed drive, by using infor on the remaining drives, and the RAID configuration. Accessing one drive at a time will not get your data back, you need all the drives in the RAID.
G+_Travis Hershberger
What type of drives are they? I ask because the likelyhood of recovering a RAID 5 of that size could be as low as 5%. Hopefully it's a problem with the power supply, and he RAID is still ok.
G+_Hagos Rush
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ I am still unable get to the web interface so I am unable to tell. I will leave it for another day or so and pray it is rebuilding.
G+_Hagos Rush
Bruno Cadorin the drive is currently blinking (big light on front). All drives in the back show activity light. I do hear some drive movement from time to time as if it's doing something. So I am unsure of the power supply not sending enough power
G+_Hagos Rush
Bruno Cadorin guess I could try replacing the power supply and see. It's the cheapest route right now. Thanks
G+_Bruno Cadorin
I'd hold off on the PS for now. The fact that the drives are spinning (sounds like) and lights are flashing would indicate it may not be at fault. 12TB will take some time to rebuild, so, do give it a day to see what happens. When we rebuilt IBM RAIDS in the data center they took many hours, and they were nowhere near 12TB. The sounds you describe, sound positive. If after a few days you still don't get a Web prompt, see if there is a local access port on the NAS and try and attach there. If that doesn't work, check to see if there is a default IP address printed on the NAS, that the unit may have reverted to, and try to access that. If after all this you still can't get access, you may need to pull the power, wait 30 seconds then power the unit up. This SHOULD reset the processor, and NOT clear the RAID config. Be sure and check that you have the correct IP address. At the very end, as a last resort, you may need to hit the reset button, which MAY possibly delete the RAID config, and render your data totally useless, but will recover your NAS. Use this option as a very last resort when all else has failed. Have you checked the vendors site for details on a problem like this? Does your unit have a maintenace mode (where you maybe hold down a button, while rebooting, for example).
G+_Bruno Cadorin
Forgot to add. DO NOT POWER THE NAS off while it is rebuilding the RAID. That's never a good thing. In fact, you should always power down these units in an orderly controlled fashion, if you can. A UPS, as you had is a good idea, usually APC has good products, it's what we used at the office. G+_Hagos Rush
Bruno Cadorin I'll check the manufacturers website. I am unsure of the auto-rebuild feature so hopefully they have some answers. And thanks for the advice. You have given me some hope
G+_Dan Hockey
Check to see what options you nas prefers for make of ups. I have an old nas that will only talk to an APC ups.
G+_Golden Retriever
Ok dumb question but I'll ask anyways, all UPS ship with the battery disconnected did you open thended door and connect the leads? Also many have both battery backed up and power surge only AC receptacles, was your NAS plugged into the correct receptacles? I've made both mistakes myself so I'm not just being an A-hole
G+_Golden Retriever
Some people have had luck recovering NAS hard drive array using spin right. But it takes a long time.
G+_Hagos Rush
Tod Sage fair questions. The UPS is connected to the battery backup receptacles. Battery was connected. Spin Rite does not work on raid 5. It can access the data but not in the raid configuration which was not unexpected.
G+_Hagos Rush
Tod Sage giving it another day or two as 12 TB is a crap ton of data to rebuild (if it's rebuilding) and then I'll assume worst case scenario. I've mentally prepared myself, and my wallet haha
G+_Golden Retriever
Spinright does not work on a nas but others have had luck pulling all the drives out and running each drive individually through spinrite and then reassembling the Nas and rebuilding when just rebuilding failed. But we're not talking about days here were talking weeks unless you run multiple copys simultaneously
G+_Hagos Rush
Hey YALL!!, Just wanted to update you and let you know that I have praised ALL of the NAS gods and they have answered my prayers. But seriously, Lacie finally came back online. I cant access the web page just yet but I can access the data which is most important. Just need to back everything up. Thanks for all of your help. Synology...here is my wallet Took two weeks to re-build. Thank God for raid
