G+_Hagos Rush
Synology Backup Question for you KITA's Now that Amazon has basically told me to shove it and pay out the rear for Drive I have been attempting to use local backups. Problem: it keeps failing I have sent Synology a support email (2x) and did not merit a response. This really builds my faith in a product #sarcasm. Im not bashing, just giving my experience so far, and it sucks. No I am not interested in testimony. I have tried their forum and they were at least helpful with what worked for them. One guy suggested ext4 format. Found some freemium software on windows and it took forever and got nowhere. I am primarily a Mac guy with my windows running in VM's. Anyhow, I need to backup this NAS to an external drive. I use the built in hyperBackup, select all 5.5TB of folders and schedule a time. It goes and then fails with no error message outside of "could not complete backup". It works with amazon drive - no problem. I have tried Mac Journaled, NTFS, APFS (yep - I was desperate), exFat. Tried compressed and uncompressed, tried breaking the backup folders up. It's a seagate 8TB drive - previously used to backup my old NAS - purchased about two - three months ago. Yes I have thought that the drive was the issue but have found nothing wrong when tested. reads/writes - sustained. No clicking Maybe its an issue with extended writing thats the issue?? anyhow...I digress. The data is compiled mostly of media files, photos and data. Any suggestions for what worked for you? If you did have to use ext4 format on the external what program did you use? Does the format really matter? I mean if it can read it then... Thanks in advance! G+_Akira Yamanita
I have no experience with this, but why not see if the backup to an ext4 formatted drive works? You can worry about reading the backups later. I'm a Linux user so ext4 is no problem but on Mac or Windows, you could look at Paragon Software. You can also access it for free using some tutorials on Mac OS.
G+_Hagos Rush
Akira Yamanita thanks, that was the idea. I just needed a piece of software to format it but.... come to think of it I have Linux running on a VM as well (duh) so I can use that to format the drive. When frustration hits haha I can’t think ? G+_Akira Yamanita
Hagos Rush Doesn't the Synology NAS have the ability to format the drive? It seems to be able to format ext4 and FAT32. https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/help/DSM/AdminCenter/system_externaldevice_devicelist
G+_Hagos Rush
Aaaaand this is why I ask you guys. I didn’t even think that my NAS could do it Akira Yamanita I’m coming from a really dumb NAS box where I could basically store data. Still new at this but once I get home from work I will attempt to format it using the NAS.
G+_Hagos Rush
Akira Yamanita Indeed you are correct bud - there is a built in utility. literally took about 1 minute. Thanks - now for the backup part, let us pray together it works
G+_Hagos Rush
Aw shucks!! We are at a grandiose 43% completed. I will state that this has NEVER happened! Super excited that it has made it this far. EXT4 is amazing! Thanks Linux
G+_Happy Macer
I didn't notice if you defined "fail"... Even new drives could have problems. Maybe run Spinrite on them? Is slow with the current version but will improve with next version. Can the synology address an 8TB drive?
G+_Hagos Rush
Happy Macer I did not go into detail with the “fail”. As it turns out it was the format of the drive that was the issue. EXT4 has been solid and I have been able to finally complete an entire backup of my NAS. Absolutely amazing. Thanks again Akira Yamanita for pointing out things about my Synology that I don’t know yet haha.
