G+_Hagos Rush
A filtering/scheduling product that works with Unifi system. So like most adults, I have children. I would like to do a couple of things: 1. Filter internet content - this I think I can accomplish through using my pi-hole (raspberry pi ad-blocking) to filter out queries (but I would rather not) 2. schedule the amount of time that the iPad can access the internet. So during the week I want 60 mins per day and set schedule limits on the weekend as well. Is there an add on or a system that I can use in tandem with the unifi hardware that will allow me to do this? There are other systems like the Eero wifi system that does this but without al lof the control that unifi has. Any assistance or suggestions that anyone can offer would be helpful. Thanks in advance! Happy Holidays! Hagos
G+_Jason Brown
Oh boy, you are a man after my own heart. Take a look at http://www1.k9webprotection.com/ I've only used it for Windows, but it's definitely a good tool to keep around. I'll read your post more thoroughly and see if I have more suggestions after I get the kids down.
G+_Hagos Rush
Jason Brown Thanks. I will look into this. I used it years ago but will check it out again.
G+_Jason Brown
Oh, and OpenDNS is your friend. The paid (inexpensive) service even has an option for whitelisted sites only. Whatever you do, every device (where possible) should have you as admin and them as a limited user. Otherwise they'll undo all your work.
G+_Hagos Rush
Jason Brown Okay, so looking at k9 again it is on a per device basis. I would rather something that is system-wide that I can implement once and then control from a single point. I would have to install on all iPads, iPhones and computers in the home. Also, this would be used to cover my guest network. The OpenDNS IP is cool and I will check that.
G+_Hagos Rush
so just checked and clearly I forgot I set this up but I am already on the OpenDNS whitelisted IP's. Which is great because it is actually one of the fastest in my area (thanks Namebench for this).
G+_Hagos Rush
Upgrading to the paid version once I figure out if I can get at least two IP's one for internal and one for guest. so that gets the filtering down now the scheduling portion. G+_Jason Brown
Yeah that aspect of K9 sucks. In my case I use it in tandem with OpenDNS, for machines that need a little something extra. What's nice about it is that it would follow them when they put they're devices on other networks.
G+_greg sneed
Take a look at dnsthingy.com - DNSthingy | everything you want... nothing you don't. It only works with a few routers but does allow for global and drvice specific rules.

G+_Ben Reese
I use OpenDNS combined with Pi-hole. Ubiquiti can already block access to devices, but I'm not sure if it will do it on a schedule. If not, put those devices on their own SSID and schedule the downtime for that. Fing Box is another option. I don't care for its methods, but it has an option to disable devices on a schedule. It just plugs into your network and uses magic (ARP spoofing) to knock devices offline when needed. K9 sounds good, but I've never trusted parental control software. I was a teen at one time and found it extremely easy to get around the blocks if I needed. Of course, that was many moons ago and I'm sure things have come a long way. G+_Ben Reese
Also, Patrick Norton has touch on this a few times on TekThing. Nothing beats parental supervision. Kids will find a way to get what they want if left alone.
G+_Mat Murdock
This will do what you want, https://meetcircle.com. I use it with my kids.
G+_Hagos Rush
Mat Murdock thanks Ill look into it. Ben Reese and yes I agree about the parenting thing 100% but sometimes, the parents need to outsmart the kids and block the internet haha
G+_Hagos Rush
Mat Murdock YAAAAASSSSS Mat This is exactly what I need. They can connect to that wifi, complete chores, use Alexa.. This...is Awesome. I also like circle go option that keeps the same filters as they go away from the network.
G+_Hagos Rush
and it can block specific apps....and rewards. yes, $money well spent
G+_Hagos Rush
Mat Murdock got lucky, on sale at BestBuy for $79.99 and apparently I had a $10 coupon. Best Christmas as a parent ever haha
G+_Mat Murdock
Just a bit of clarification. It can connect to your network via WiFi or Ethernet. I would recommend you connect it it via Ethernet for best reliability. How the kids connect to your network remains the same.
G+_Hagos Rush
Mat Murdock okay cool. I thought it was a WiFi system in itself. And yes wired is all I do.
G+_J Miller
My .02$ When your kids are ready, have a talk with them about what is on the net. Make sure they know what is socially acceptable and what is not. They are going to get the net from other places. It is in my opinion that they know it ahead of time.
