G+_Alex Shultz
Is there a place that lists the "standard" things that Fr. likes to use? I am just getting started with Know How and would like to put together a kind of "starter kit" with all of the little things that seem to be kind of taken for granted that a maker should have (e.g. connectors for different voltages; jumpers - male only? Male/female good to have? Ever have use for female/female and is that worth getting?; the UBEC; a rechargeable battery or a power source; LED strips). I am excited to get going on things but cannot figure out where to get something really simple, listed in ep 250: the connectors. Fr. mentioned that he has some rated for different voltages and was worried about getting them confused. But I do not see where to find the ratings on different connectors when I look around. He said the names of the new ones he wants to start using but I do not see them listed in the notes. I imagine this has been talked about in previous episodes. I am having trouble searching that out, though. Maybe the finer points of the search engine are eluding me. Would love to see a list of "essentials" or maybe an episode to help someone get started with a good, basic inventory of parts. Something that would help a newbie to get going with 90% of the stuff someone might want to use to do all of these awesome looking projects. G+_Travis Hershberger
A lot of the basic components started showing up with the quadfather (custom build quadcopters) series. It would be nice to have a list, but someone would have to go back and watch most of the shows. While I'd really enjoy doing that, I just don't have the time. G+_Alex Shultz
Travis Hershberger Sounds like a great place to start looking. Was it really called Quadfather? I am trying to find that in an episode title and not having much luck.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Alex Shultz No, the Quadfather thing was just a joke that stuck in my head. Just look at quadcopter episodes.
G+_Alex Shultz
Thanks. Looks like maybe ep 115. Will start binge watching now.
G+_David Wiggins
I've found some of the Arduino kits have a lot of components regularly used. The one I got from sunfounder had a good collection, as well as a series of basic exercises. I also recommend a decent multimeter to check things like voltage, continuity within a circuit and whatnot (ifixit has an excellent guide on learning good to use one). If I remember correctly, he recommends Weller (which is what I have) for soldering iron/station. Helping hands are a must, and I also suggest a small adjustable circuit board holder like the Aven 17010. Heat shrink tubing is another item, especially for "finished"projects, rather than testing, learning, or experimenting type projects. There are also several types of LED strips/sticks worth looking at. That's a little of what I've picked up the last while.
