G+_Vance McAlister
As commented elsewhere, the irony: a company whose primary sponsor has been Go to Meeting fires someone for telecommuting.
G+_Chris Peden (Peedy)
I do not think Mike has got the chops to host/moderate a show. Tom is great at it.
G+_Aldo Merino
I'll leave the office politics, if any, and speculation to other people, but I'll just say I wish Tom the best and I'll be willing to give the new TNT a chance. Frankly, I barely noticed the move to LA, even as someone who watches the video feed. But hey, let's not prematurely write off the show and at least give Sarah and Iyaz a little more credit, shall we;-)? Besides, TWIT is a business after all, and if the show starts to "fizzle", I'm sure Lisa and Leo will implement changes to turn it around, but give people a little room to breathe and experiment. Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of the changes so far -- I can't stand the breaking coverage bits since it's mostly talking over other people talking, I'm pretty news-ed out so the appeal of an evening broadcast is minimal to me, and I quite liked Tom's persona and contributions -- but the only guarantee is that things will change and TWIT provides no shortage of great content in any case. I'll certainly hang around.
G+_Nick Young
I am sure it's not as simple as just saying TnT did not miss a beat. I love Tom Merritt, but Leo was talking about expanding the News division at TWiT even before Tom left for LA. Then everything kind of stopped expanding. They probably need a full time employee at the studio that could head up the whole division and start up the new News shows they are doing. i.e. Tech News Tonight, and new Breaking News segments. I would guess they could not afford to keep both Tom and Elgan on at the same time and being local was a big enough deal to lose Tom. That's my brain talking about reasons why, but my heart is still screaming "noooooo." I don't know how I feel. I love TWiT, Leo and Tom. It just sucks anyway you slice it. I really hope Tom will come back on the shows as often as possible. :(
G+_Vance McAlister
Nick Young-Soares I think you may be correct in all of that, I just think it is a shame since I don't believe those new directions will end up successful enough to have lost your best talent for. But you're analysis is likely correct.
G+_Christopher Weeks
Mike Elgan Doesn't have a studio personality. He's a good writer and journalist but as far as the shows that Mike has been on between Twit and Macbreak Weekly he doesn't spew out serious video journalist and definitely isn't one to lead others in that department. G+_Nick Young
Vance McAlister it's a huge loss for sure. I am sad about it. Aldo Merino I agree about the night show, it can't just be TnT again at night? There is not enough news in a day. Maybe more in-depth coverage, interviews or something. Elgan does have more inside contact and sources than anyone at TWiT it would seem.
G+_Vance McAlister
Manny Fleurmond Tom's tweets make that pretty clear.
G+_Aldo Merino
Nick Young-Soares IIRC from the times Leo has mentioned the subject, the evening news bit is a bit of recap of the more substantive parts of TNT with whatever may have happened afterwards (since TNT starts fairly early). We'll find out how it turns out if and when it comes to be. I'm not really the target audience for it, and that's fine. I mean can barely keep up with the TWIT shows I do follow regularly, especially as some of the shows start to consistently push the 2 hour mark, let alone everything else. G+_Aldo Merino
My heart goes out to the guy. I'll certainly be listening to his post-Scotch East Meets West podcast tomorrow morning.
G+_Sidharth Dassani
Well I respect the opinion of Mike Elgan and think he has very good insights. But whenever he is on podcasts he hijacks them , You will hear him much more than others which is not good for a round table type show.
G+_Stephen Butler
I always got the feeling that Leo seen Tom as his successor and a way of turning twit from the Leo network in to Twit. I'm a big fan of twit, but I tend to think I like the cottage days better. I dunno, my be the Rose tinted glasses. Now I need to find out where this story comes from, and what Tom had planned. G+_Michael Kerr
While I am sure that Mike Elgan will do a wonderful job at TWiT, Tom Merritt will be missed. I guess I will have to check out Sword and Laser.

G+_Eng. Jorge Santana
I think Leo is right that for,Tom to run the news on twit with the new nightly show he needed to be in house. You can't run a news division from Skype.
G+_Marc Telesha
Vance McAlister No I don't think Molly Wood was offered anything, because they knew she would say no. My hope this isn't true is that she didn't want to work there either. There is an unknown issue with people not being happy working in the studio.
