G+_Clay Ginn
Question for the Americans and travelers of the TWiT Community: What's the best option for someone with an unlocked GSM phone who is visiting CA for a few weeks and needs lots of data?? The best thing I've come across is some vague deal from T-Mobile and Walmart, but I 'd really like to hear what you peeps have to say!
G+_Steve Hoffman
readysim.com had reasonable packages for a recent visit to the US. They provide services on T-Mobile's network - Worth looking into
G+_Rory Glynn
Steve Hoffman Thanks! I'll take a look
G+_Adrian Zugaj
T-Mobile has a pre-paid $30/month plan with unlimited text, 100 minutes of talk, and 5GB of high speed data, throttled after that. If you use a voip solution like Google Voice, it's great. Not 100% sure it's still offered though.
G+_Rory Glynn
Adrian Zugaj yeah that's the one that I found, I'm hoping I can confirm a) it exists b) how to get it
G+_Mark Evans
A pay monthly UK SIM from Three. They include the US in their "Feel at Home" plan, so there is no extra cost for going to the US. But I think they take your unlimited plan and cap it at 26GB? Should be able to pay around £15 I think.
G+_Rory Glynn
Wow that's a hell of a deal Mark Evans but I probably won't be able to sign up on my way through Heathrow!
G+_Dan Colomb
I believe that AT&T and T-Mobile are the only major GSM carriers in the US; both have prepaid plans. Sprint and Verizon are both CDMA iirc. If you have an LTE phone, I think your options open up a bit.?
G+_L I
The $30 plan is still around but apparently is only offered online and only for new customers. You may be able to get it at Walmart but will have to rip the sim card out of a cheap burner phone.
G+_Rory Glynn
Lionel D that works for me, I don't suppose you know which part of the T-Mobile website shows it, by any chance?
G+_Rory Glynn
Mark Evans I went and checked in a Three Ireland store today, but their roaming data only extends to the UK and a few other European partner countries.
G+_L I
Rory Glynn the plan is here http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-plans Search for "100 minutes talk | Unlimited text | First 5 GB at up to 4G speeds" You get your sim card from them and then activate on the website and pick this plan. You can only pick it once though so if you change, that's it.
G+_Rory Glynn
That sounds perfect, thanks for your help Lionel D !
G+_Randy Hudson
If your primary concern is data and not phone calls, finding free Wifi in So Cal is pretty damned easy. Really depends on exactly where you're going to be I guess.
