G+_Michael Larson
Hi all. I've been a cord cutter for years but the wife is threatening to get cable again because she wants to pause, rewind, and record live tv. We don't watch any cable channels, if we do want to watch a program we either Hulu/Amazon/Apple Tv it. I have a great Plex Media Server set up, but my live tv is only ota broadcasts picked up by my antenna. I have done some research and it looks like I can use tvheadend running on a Raspberry Pi with attached usb storage as the backend, a HomerunHD as the tuner, and Kodi as the frontend on the 2 television sets. My question is has anyone ever done this, or is there a better way? The more diy the better, and I hope to not pay monthly fees to make it work. Thanks all, and looking forward to putting it together.
G+_Robert Hafer
I have a HDHomeRun Connect hooked to an OTA antenna and my wired network and I use my Plex server, running in a Mac mini and also wired in, to record live broadcast TV. I think this still requires a Plex Pass subscription, and you won’t get s good recording over WiFi. I get the best quality playback on streaming boxes the are wired; but get acceptable quality using WiFi to mobile devices, YMMV.
G+_Carl Elton
I bit the bullet and went the easy way with TiVo ti records 4 stations at once. tivo.com - TiVo Roamio OTA DVR | Antenna DVR and Streaming | 1TB Storage It comes with a life time guide and it also streams and has Plex on it but the processor is not the fastest and it struggles on my Plex movies . I can set programs to record from a APP on my phone also. I know it not what your looking for but I just thought you like to see what else is out there. G+_Rich Sobocinski
I had a TiVo for years. Went through 3 of them. Loved it. Loved pausing live TV and FF'g through commercials on my recorded shows. Then I cut the cord. OTA for local channels (which I rarely use), YouTube and Terrarium TV for most everything else. I have no need to pause live TV now. Terrarium has nearly every TV show and movie available and they have no commercials.

G+_Scott Wayman
Hey Michael, I am cheering you on in the background, but have not done this. I did test the silicondust.com - DVR Service - Silicon Dust for a while, and it did a solid job with all the OTR stuff coming from the HDHR...Might be a short and easy journey to get you to recorded content. G+_Brent Vrieze
If you like doing Linux builds try MythTV which can record off the HDHomeRun. Then you can use a Raspberry Pi on the TV with an infrared receiver for playback. You will need a full fleged computer for this though. There are several MythTV variants you can download and set up. G+_Ben Reese
I've got a tuner for my PC. Had it setup with NextPVR to record a couple shows and worked ok. With Kodi running on the Fire TV, I was able to watch live or recorded TV. If you're going for SAF (Spousal Acceptance Factor), don't go that route. I haven't tried it, but HD Homerun tied into Plex (with Plex Pass) should give a decent user experience and I think Silicone Dust even has DVR functionality built in if you have a NAS to run the service on. Tivo is probably the easiest option and would still save money over Cable Co.
G+_Paul Miller
I've long been a MythTV fan but, although pausing live TV was the killer app when I built my first DVR, honestly I no longer watch live TV. I just use my MythTV PC to record shows and strip the commercials which I then watch on Plex.
G+_Rich Sobocinski
Paul Miller pick up your shows from Terrarium. No commercials to strip and they're already organised by season and episode. Also, you don't need big honkin' storage because you can stream the shows
G+_J Miller
I have been recently using the free week of Youtube TV and love it. I am planning on paying the 35$/month because of the limitless DVR capabilities, pausing live TV, 6 personal accounts and the fact that we can watch it all of the places we go. Do yourself a favor and check it out michael larson

G+_William Jacoby
Paul Miller this is what I do except I use Kodi. The times I watch live I can either use my TV or for the one Kodi on a monitor only I use the hdhr connects streaming ability with Kodi.
G+_Paul Miller
William Jacoby The main reason that I use Plex instead of Kodi is that my preferred streaming box is Roku.
G+_Peter Hanse
Well I wanted that as well but used as excuse to upgrade to 4K HDR 55” TCL with Roku built in. G+_J Miller
We own a seasonal rental and I am in the process of ditching satellite and putting Roku Ultra's on all of the TV's there and here with paid subscriptions for Netflix, Prime and Youtube TV around 50$ a month we get full DVR on 3 TV's at the rental and 3 TV at home with 5 more accounts for family here with endless DVR. With PLEX here for our video database there is nothing we cant do. Kids loving having their own DVR with just their crap on it they can watch on their tablets when we go to grandmas. Use to keep my own TV database but too much to handle now.
