G+_Demian Dellinger
If there is a going to be a bad, unavoidable accident, what algorithm does a self-driving car use to determine who lives and dies? So I have this question for all and Google Automotive Google+ Life at Google about self driving cars. I'm interest in Jeff Jarvis and Gina Trapani 's thoughts as well. Does the car err on the side of protecting its own occupants? What if the probability of all parties surviving using maneuver A is only 50% but with maneuver B self-driving car occupant survival is 98% probable with the probability of the occupants of the other car only 15%. What if there are two self driving cars but one has an 85 year old woman in it and the other has a family of 6 on the way to soccer practice? What if there are two self-driving cars and one has someone with 7 twitter followers and the other with someone with 600,000? How does/will this work? #selfdrivingcars #cars #automotive #googlecar

G+_Prem Lee Barbosa
if you're assuming a crash between two communicating autonomous cars then they should be avoiding each other well before the probability of an accident increases, probably before the crash is inevitable. The crash would be inevitable due to an as yet unclaimed force, like a non-autonomous vehicle or object hitting one of the autonomous vehicles. If only one of the cars is autonomous then it has no data on the other party and couldn't make any decision based on the "who's"
G+_Demian Dellinger
Prem Lee Barbosa The same could be said of people driving cars who are supposed to be avoiding each other but accidents happen (human malfunction). But even in the case of a outside event what happens? Tree falls in the road, autonomous car A can hit the tree head on or swerve and knock autonomous car B off the side of the road. There will be unavoidable autonomous vehicle collisions, the question is what will determine the vehicles' response with regard to preserving human lives. (everything crashes, human error, mechanical failure, computational failure, bugs). Even in the case of an autonomous vehicle and non-autonomous vehicle colliding, is the algorithm for autonomous vehicle occupant preservation or something else? G+_Prem Lee Barbosa
It's an interesting question, but for a circumstance I expect to happen extremely rarely I'll leave this up to the people working on the project
