G+_Michael Fuselier
I watched the Know How episode about turning an old phone into a security camera. So I bought a Motorola Droid X MB810. I installed AirDroid only Android 2.3.4 is apparently too old for the current version of AirDroid so that's problem 1. Then I tried to install a few motion detection apps, non of which were very good or responsive. In order to get the latest version of AirDroid working I need to root the phone and install a newer version of Android, but I am having trouble doing that. There are a ton of phone apps and pc apps that claim to be able to root the phone but my Antivirus software doesn't like most of them and the others don't seem to work. Suggestions on the safest way to root and upgrade my Droid X?
G+_Robert Short
When I rooted last I deactivate the AV, because I ran into the same by nature the scripts that run to root are a form of a virus to get around what the carriers lock down the bootloader

G+_Michael Fuselier
Yes there were many long detailed things on that site that I tried. But I just went ahead and created a restore point on my PC, turned off the Avira antivirus, and downloaded and installed KingoRoot and it worked. I now have a rooted Droid X, I even downloaded Root Checker Basic which verified it. So, on to the next step.

G+_Michael Fuselier
Thanks. Great idea. I'm 30 years a computer geek. But mostly used Macs. Tried to stay away from PCs and android. But recently I've taken a IT job managing PC's so I'm all in now. Having fun.
G+_Ben Reese
If you have kingroot, you may see if there's an option to switch that to SuperSU. (I'm planning on doing that with my daughter's $25 walmart phone tonight or tomorrow). To install 3rd party ROMs, you'll probably want a custom recovery - TWRP or ClockworkMod I think are the two popular ones. That will let you take a full backup of the system partition and get back to your current OS later if something breaks. That recovery is also the easiest place to install ROMs. If you can get Cyanogen Mod (first glance I'm seeing mention of CM11 in the XDA forums) for that, it would probably be your best option (from what I remember, light weight and stable). Also with 3rd party ROMs (especially Cyanogen Mod), you'll probably have to side-load the Google apps to get the Play Store. Not difficult - usually just download and flash gapps from the recovery. And, of course, XDA forums is probably the best resource around for all-things rooting. Not a bad idea to read through some of the posts to get feel for what other's have had success with. I've always just made sure I took a backup (in the recovery) before I flashed a new ROM. Good luck!
