G+_Darryl Gibbs
I may get some hate for this, but I really think Leo Laporte needs to stop barking over his guests. I understand that he is the host, its his company etc, but taking this past TWiT for example, I lost count the number of times that his guests were trying to make a point, just to be steam rolled into silence so he could say what he wanted. Highly rude and obnoxious. Leo please consider your guests and listeners in this regard. For me it puts a bad mark on an otherwise great network. Your other hosts don't do this, so please don't do it either.
G+_Hector Lugo
This is common practice in radio because often guests will drone on and on. Some are great guests with great information to impart who are just incredibly verbose like Ihnatko and Dr Pizza, and so his interruptions serve to keep the show moving along.? G+_Mark Slavin
I didn't watch any of the shows he normally does when he was on holiday.
G+_Darryl Gibbs
I agree with you in theory, however I believe that in this case, Leo is wanting to be heard above all others. The conversation still continues in the same vein after he has finished, so why can't he let the others speak when they started first? Its not often that he does this to then redirect the conversation.
G+_Darryl Gibbs
Mark Slavin they were actual decent, especially the first one with Becky
G+_Jose C Martinez
I do wish he would let his guests finish their point but sometimes this is a necessary evil. Especially with that chick from Mashable...
G+_Mark Slavin
I tell a lie Darryl Gibbs?, I watched the one with Becky, that was a good one.
G+_Dave Trautman
I usually accept his interruptions when he's adding to the point, but this past TWiT was much worse. He did stomp on other commenters a lot more than usual. ON my watching (live) I felt the sound from the Skype guests was much lower than the local guests. This doesn't usually happen. Near the end of the show he was letting people have more time, but it wasn't nearly enough when they were all joining in and he was stomping on their remarks. I'm with you on the difference between his guest hosts in past weeks and his recent show. They left lots of room for people to "think" and speak. I dont' excuse the behaviour but he's had a lot of time to think about the news and stuff while he was away and likely wasn't aware he was getting his opinion in a little too strongly. I can't recall, really, but I suspect this happens every year after he takes a holiday. Complaints about him rise when he returns from somewhere and shows how different he is from the rest. I was also getting annoyed with his interruptions on "The New Screen Savers show". A variety show host shouldn't be the centre of attention. I'm hoping today's MBW isn't spoiled by his antics. G+_Brian Tillman
I notice he often doesn't even listen to what they're saying. He gets an idea in his head of what the problem is, even though they've said something else, and often don't get a chance to correct him.
G+_Joe Loschiavo
I have to support Leo on this one. When he was off the shows there was almost never a contrary opinion expressed and some of the guests took advantage by dominating a discussion instead of sharing their opinions with the other guests. Yeah he goes off topic but it's not just "click bait" like JD used to do. Leo is the only guy that will question things on the Apple shows and bring up topics that need to be addressed instead of just an hour of talk about earnings, stock price, etc. INMO. Leo was a little lost on this episode for sure but that's what happens when you disconnect from technology for a couple week.
G+_Darryl Gibbs
Joe Loschiavo? fair enough, you make some great points. I directed my post at this past TWiT specifically, but to me in general he overly dominates a conversation to the point where it goes beyond him directing/hosting it and more taking over completely. But I will agree, he does do the Devil's advocate thing well.
G+_L I
He does stomp on people a lot - sometimes they need it because they are droning on. Christina Warren and Kevin Marks do love to string out an answer. But there are some guests who are on the verge of getting to their point that then get cut off. It's a bit disconcerting. G+_Dave Trautman
Joe Loschiavo, you are right under normal conditions. I'm on record defending him in the past and I understand just how hard the job is. He also has a bigger picture in his mind of who is watching while others (replacement hosts) are just trying to "do the steps" he does. Some of the best TWiT episodes have been when there is a healthy discourse and much disagreement. But in some cases, like has been pointed out in last Sunday's episode, he's somewhat swirling in his own tornado of thoughts and not letting anyone else in. As a radio guy he's not going to let a lot of "dead air" happen (by instinct mostly) and he's very happy to take the contrarian position (on any show he hosts - not just the Apple stuff). I watched the MBW expecting a similar performance but he gave a lot of time to people to outline their points and give enough background for it to stick. Perhaps he was distracted by opening a box just delivered, but I felt he was still taking charge, handling the list, and getting to the news without stepping on anyone's remarks too badly. I also think the feed audio balance was much better because Serenity was able to make a noise at her end and he could hear it well enough to stop and let her get a word in. I'm not excusing Sunday's TWiT just because of bad audio from the Skype feeds, but it might have been a contributing factor (along with what everyone else here has speculated could have been the cause).
