I love VLC and was excited to hear that it will work for downloading YouTube. For me, it only works about half the time. I get an error message saying,

Keepvid is good, but it doesn't always work either.

I've usually gone with TubeMate for Android. App seems a bit shady, but I think that's mostly because it's not on the Play Store and there are a few knockoffs of it. It's available on the Amazon Appstore last I checked.

See my post about VLC/YouTube handling. It's likely using an obfuscated URL that VLC can't parse.
