G+_Phill Wiggin
Tech Guy 989: At about 90 minutes in on the TechGuyLabs youtube video, , I understand Leo to be saying that Verizon can't prevent tethering because of a FTC or FCC rule. I'm on AT&T wouldn't this also apply to any mobile company? Verizon tried to get the caller to pay $20 but again my understanding is that Leo is saying no one has to pay that just get a tethering app. I've had a $30 AT&T unlimited data plan for many years. About a year ago I tethered my laptop with FoxFi and got an email from AT&T that unless FoxFi was uninstalled and tethering stopped then the following month I would be moved to a 5gb $50 data plan which they allow tethering on. I have wifi available most of the time so not a huge data user. Their 3gb plan is $30 and 3 gigs certainly on average would get me by but tethering on occasion would really be nice. What do you guys think should I be able to tether on AT&T without an additional charge? I think I'm about to give it a try again : ) Thanks in advance
G+_Ahmad Anbar
I think they log everything you access & use the user agent string to know if you're tethering or not, that's the only way they would know.
G+_Gordon Medley
Dumped ATT after 11 years. Paid my 500+ penalty fee for all our phones and moved to TMobile. Never been happier with our family plan.
G+_Steve Everett
Gordon Medley TMobile has a couple of plans I like and would probably be with them also but I'm in rural West Kentucky and currently AT&T is really my only choice as far as coverage. G+_Michelle “SugarCube” Ha
It depends on the carrier :(
G+_Steve Everett
Michelle Stanley That's kind of what I thought too until I watched this week's Tech Guy episode. Maybe I misunderstood Leo. I just watched again and to be more specific he is saying that carriers are required to allow tethering apps to be used on any device in the 700 megahertz spectrum purchased by Verizon and AT&T. The exact language is "licensees shall not deny, limit, or restrict the ability of their customers to use the devices and applications of their choice". He gave credit to Google for pushing to have this included in the bill.
G+_Gordon Firemark
But they CAN charge for the bandwidth on any non approved tethering app?. I.e., they can't say "no tethering"..but they can charge you for it.
G+_Michelle “SugarCube” Ha
I have Verizon I can use my iPhone as a hot spot if I want but I have to pay more for my datA plan, right now I only have 300mb a month that's 20 bucks and don't think it's really worth using my phone as a hot spot because ill go over in no time :/ I can pay more if I want more 3G . I don't get charged for using my iPhone as a hot spot but I do have to pay for my 3G . AT&T should be the same , well at least I would think so :/
G+_Michelle “SugarCube” Ha
I watched the same show , Leo was alittle unsure himself, you can use a hotspot app with a plan that premittes it, the FCC rules that company's can't just say no any more , so what AT&T did was say ok you can do it but only with a different plan ( which is wrong) but that is to cover AT&T butt :/ I would call AT&T and ask them straight up!
