Now I understand why I didn't find anything special or live while Build2014 was in progress ... Windows should come with condoms (sic).

Trying to remember when I was told that if something is going on I should check http://live.twit.tv, it would be talked about.

(Even a new product by Amazon, without any kind of live streaming got a Twit Special.

Wondering what will happen with a Google I/O or a WWDC, they're for developers also ...)

Somewhat sad ... that's life.

If something big in the next years can be referred to Build2014 ... TWiT wasn't there. I'm sad.?

I do agree,  I'm not sure what the coverage was like on TWiT, as I don't keep it on all day, but there was obviously no TWiT special. What was the coverage like on Tech News Tonight? This seemed to be the same for the Internet in general. Most of my favourite liveblogs were either not on, or difficult to find for some reason. There was one for office for iPad, hmmmm.

Ok, Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ.

I'll check your reporting when Google I/O or WWDC happen.

But, you'll have at least one TWiT Special for each, then MacBreak and TWiG :)

And I'll be watching all of them :)

But please ... don't try to show me what wasn't there.

Damian Mongru check the news on Tech News Today or 2Night that night.

If you find opening news beeing about Build ... tell me.

If you go back a week, you'll find a lot of MSFT reading your email and comments ...

Not a problem. I'm just sad because it's the casts you love, by the people you trust.

I need to trust them when they talk about matters I know little about.

mal disposto -- The reason why we didn't have a traditional "build special" is because we rolled it into "Windows Weekly." We moved the show from it's regular time to Friday, so that Mary Jo and Paul could be in-studio to talk about everything they learned at Build.

We do the same thing for WWDC and GoogleIO. WWDC gets rolled into "Macbreak" and GoogleIO is put into "This Week in Google"

Hope that helps.

I understand that there are a lot of reasons for deciding whether or not to show the Build keynote. I guess one of the big problems is that it is a 3 hour keynote I do not know which shows would have to be rescheduled. Also, as mentioned above, I do not know what the coverage was like throughout the day, so maybe that was sufficient.

It did seem like a very important keynote, not least of which were demonstrations of  updates to both Windows and Windows Phone. Twit has been explicit in saying that they want to do more live reporting. I felt that Build is both technology-news and news-worthy, and fits TWiTs remit quite nicely.

Saying WW was the Build special is not quite what we are looking for. Of course WW is going to cover Build - it's a show that covers Microsoft. The Macbreak Weekly after an Apple keynote isn't a special, there's an actual Breaking News Special (sometimes with puppets) which serves that purpose.

Those who use and follow MS are saying that it doesn't receive the same treatment as Apple and Google. This may be that MS isn't as cool a company (as the other two), or maybe doesn't carry as much influence as it used to but I don't think the coverage should be purely a popularity contest. I think that MS are producing a lot of cool technology and should be covered on that basis. If the office for iPad announcement was worthy of coverage, surely Build would be too.

Finally, not to worry though, it is what it is, and Friday's WW was one of the best shows I  can remember on TWiT!

  • 2 months later...

Ok, Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ, the shows are out.

Everything got a Special AND the normal show ...

I rest my case.

(good show, last TWiT.

I'm sorry if we ruined the last 30 seconds of the match.

Think we just got kicked out today and USA is still in Brasil)

:)?

Absolutely mal disposto  couldn't agree more. A couple of times during TWiT specials recently, they have even mentioned they do this for all the big announcements, WWDC, IO and Build - no, no you do not :-)

Just to add fuel to your fire, I don't think there was a Surface 3 special, and I understand it is a judgement call, but there was a lot of chatter on the internet about it for a week or so afterwards.

Also, I see that my 3 hour keynote is too long for a TWiT special may have been cutting everyone a little too much slack.

These conferences also help define a roadmap, or at least a direction, that the company will be following. So they should be covered so that everyone has a basic level of knowledge for as many other companies as possible.

Anyway, roll on Build 2015 where everything is covered in extreme detail, and MS doesn't announce anything new or exciting...

:)

No fire here, just sad that they "dropped the ball" on live coverage.

I understand, after all Windows Weekly is the show with the least downloads and no one cares about it :)

Build, new Surface or TechEd aren't important. Microsoft didn't even get a new CEO in his first events in that role.

Nobody is even talking about Microsoft and their new atitude.

Moving on ... :(

I am not going to belabour the point of not showing Build (although it may be too late for that), however, I think your last point is pertinent.

I think a lot of companies are being judged on 'old values', or their is an 'implicit bias' due to an unfamiliarity with Windows, rather than the tech they are producing, and whether that technology is good or not.

Whenever MS is mentioned on TWiG Jeff Jarvis exclaims a reflexive 'eurgh!' It was also amazing how many Android Wear things were already on Samsung's Galaxy Gear, but it was probably ignored because it is Samsung, and they make plastic gadgets etc etc. Bloatware like 'S-Health' is a laughing stock, until someone else does it. Occulus is now evil because it was bought by Facebook.

To your point, it feels like there is a different approach to MS recently, resulting in exciting tech. We shouldn't forget MS anti-competitive practices or other bad behaviour, but we should also enjoy the technology (whoever created it) for what it is (and what it can do).
