The general advice from our favorite HV Geek would be the darkest Munsell Gray you can stand.

I was thinking dark red. Never thought about a grey

Dark gray is best, from everything I've heard. I couldn't do gray in my media room, so did dark brown back wall (where the tv is mounted) and dark cream on the opposing walls. Still looks nice, but it's dark enough that it appears close to black when watching a movie. Do some research and then run it past the Wife or S.O.....
