Privateinternetaccess.com you can anonymously with bitcoin OR any cash gift card. They were voted on of the best this year. Easy to use, helps with netflix throttling. Faster than the throttle the isp puts on you. They also sell preconfigered dmz routers if you dont feel like building your own. Works with openvpn and merlin/ddwrt.

Vpn to your house or even a vps only encrypts to that point, after it on the internet, from your home or vps ip addy. With pia (privateinternetaccess) , everyone tunnels out the same place, to they cannot discern which traffic came from where. With your kwn hosting, you are onky hiding from ISP or work. Torrentfreak just did a best of , pia is at the top. 50 bucks a year, complete anonymous ourchasing available.

I tried proXPN on a promo code from a TWiT podcast. I have in the past setup my own openvpn server so I figured it would be no problem connecting to theirs. Well unfortunately they won't give you the address to an openvpn server, or the certificate or anything. They do have pptp, but the connection was flaky at best. I spent a week asking their support for the openvpn settings, but they just kept sending me the same KB article on setting up a pptp connection under Linux. Good thing for me they do the trial period. So if you want the VPN to work in Linux, don't bother with proxpn.

John, I can relate to the not leaving a machine running all day long. Using a Fritz!Box (VDSL connection) I was able to set up (IPSec) VPN in the router itself. From a public WiFi I can connect directly to my own router at home and use it as a safe  'entrypoint/VPN server' for access to the internet again. Works great, no speed restrictions (like with many VPN services) unless you have a really slow connection in the first place. It's free and of course I can also connect to my own home network devices also (e.g. my NAS). Another advantage is there is no need for any portwarding (like you would need with a machine as VPN server in your home network). Connecting from the internet using the VPN brings me past the router's NAT into my home network. Besides a Fritz!Box (AVM, Germany) there  probably may be more routers with these capabilities. I received mine from my ISP, so never really searched for another.
