G+_Ronald Kurr
I saw the latest episode on premise wiring and I have a question about using using all 4 pairs. A buddy of mine recommended that I run one cable but only use two pairs per head. He claims that only 2 of the 4 pairs are used so I can get 2 drops out of one cable. Is my buddy right or is he steering me down a dark path?
G+_610GARAGE
Yes in both accounts. There are 4 unused wires(mostly) in ethernet cable. This is for power over ethernet or POE. But if you did this, most likely you will have cross talk, and get a very bad signal. Not to mention, you will be eliminating POE.
G+_Joseph Weckwerth
As I recall this also changed in the 1000 spec. True for 10/100. Run more cables you will be happier in the end.
G+_Steven Atkinson
4 pairs are requires for gigabit Ethernet so I too would run two cables.
G+_Tim Brady
What is premise? Is it a us way of saying premises - meaning building or office? Sorry to be so daft.
G+_James Berry
From personal experience, it is best to pull all you will need initially. Pulling wiring later with congestion is a pain in the butt. I'd wire for gigabit and not be cute with the wiring IMHO.
G+_Cole Brodine
It is really easy to pull multiple runs at the same time and Ethernet is relatively cheap. I'd error on the side of caution and pull an extra wire that you wouldn't use before you try to save a few pennies and pull just one and split it up. There are some adapters that allow you to use Ethernet cable to transmit things like HDMI, so it is good to have all the wires done properly incase you want to use stuff like that in the future. Tim Brady - You are correct. A premise is usually a property of some sort like a building or office. It can be a home also.
