G+_Steven Kaplan
Episode 110: I replaced the screen on a Samsung Galaxy S3 a week before Brian's description on KH. I was able to use a hair dryer to soften the glue and strips of two sided tape to help secure the screen. Never took a phone apart previously. Amazed that the thing worked: it was like assembling an old 386 computer with components about one-fiftieth the size. Cost $100. (Apparently, you can replace the glass only for $10 if the LCD and digitizer are intact, but the chance of success without prior experience is much less than replacing the entire display). G+_Nate Follmer
I used to work at a cell phone store and I can tell you you're right. I think I've successfully replaced maybe 2 glasses without breaking anything else. Much easier to just replace the works. Plus, if the glass broke you never know how much longer the digitizer will last.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
The other part about replacing ONLY the glass is that most of us don't have the skill or tools to align it PERFECTLY with the digitizer/frame. Even a slight, imperceptible flaw in the rebonding will make the glass much likely to crack again.
