G+_Christian Delén
Regarding the wireless audio, is it possible to send audio to airplay receivers (for instance Airport express) from any IOS app or only from itunes apps (the Music app)? http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/#airplay gives the impression of the latter. http://twit.tv/show/know-how/
G+_Michael Kickingbear
Christian, If I understood your question correctly, the answer is no. Streaming audio via AirPlay is not strictly confined to just iTunes on your Mac. Many iOS apps now support AirPlay. For example, the TWIT app does. And if you connect your airport express to a piece of audio equipment via its line out jack, any iOS device with AirPlay enabled, and connected to the same wifi network can send its audio to that airport express for use with connected audio equipment. And what's really nice is that if you are using more than one airport express and listen to music in multiple rooms you can select more than one location to send audio to. Hope that helps. G+_Christian Delén
Thank you! To send to multiple locations is really what I am after, actually. But I have not succeeded so far. I don't have any real airports yet, but have tried to simulate with AirServer or Airfoil Speakers for Mac, sending from my Iphone 4 with IOS 6.1.2. When I select a second receiver (Mac with airport software) the first receiver is automatically deselected on my phone. Do I need more modern hardware? G+_Michael Kickingbear
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I believe it's a function of iOS 5.0 and greater AND the latest airport express device hardware. I have not specifically tested multiple locations myself. But have seen it demonstrated through you tube videos. Now for VIDEO streaming I'm not sure if multiple locations are possible as I believe multiple security codes would be needed and probably specific to each location. Plus if two locations are going to share the same content, I'm not sure how that content would sync up like otber technologies allow you to do. (Like dish networks hopper system) I'm curious now, so I may give this a shot soon. I need one more current airport express to simulate the second location. G+_Christian Delén
I am only after sound right now. After some more testning and research, I think it is possible with one to many from ITunes on Mac, for instance, but not from the phone.
G+_Christian Rodriguez Nou
You need to use airfoil as kind of a pass through with your computer. Hope this helps... http://weblog.rogueamoeba.com/2012/02/12/send-audio-from-ios-to-multiple-speakers-with-airfoil/
G+_Christian Delén
I try to do without a full computer running all the time and still have a easy-started system. I see that Apple TV can act as an airplay receiver. I also read that Apple TV can send audio to several airplay receivers. Do you know if it would be possible to have on Apple TV and one or more Airport Express and let the Apple TV act middle man as well as output the audio on its digital port? I think I will check with Apple about that.
G+_Angelito “BongH” Hatol
Why fiddle around with bluetooth or a proprietary app when you can use FM radio.
G+_iyaz akhtar
Angelito Hatol I actually tested out a whole house FM transmitter solution and it was fraught with interference.
G+_derek ha
Very interested in this thread. Have AppleTVs, one new, and one original. Also interested in just playing music on my IMac system and simultaneously in one other room.
G+_Michael Kickingbear
I haven't tested multiple location streaming via iOS. I believe it can be done through iTunes on a Mac. I think based on limited experience with my new Apple TV that it seems that you can only select one location at a time from a iOS device. Like a audio switcher. Unless tapping and holding on a audio source allows you then select another destination? Has anyone played around with that?
