G+_Steve Manke
Two Drives in a MacBook Pro: I installed the OWC DataDoubler in my pre-Retina MacBook Pro. It let me add a SSD to the machine by replacing the optical drive. I also replaced the stock HDD with a 1TB HDD along the way and now I have a MacBook with performance that surpasses the Mac Pro that the laptop replaced. I used the terminal to strip the pair of drives into a "Fusion Drive" and now have the speed of the SSD with the unparalleled capacity of the HDD— all in a single mounted volume. I just wanted to share since you mentioned this type of configuration on the latest episode. Unfortunately, Apple just stopped selling the non-Retina version of the MacBook. That was very disappointing because my current configuration is nothing short of amazing, even if I don't have the latest, high resolution screen. The latest MacBooks might be thinner and lighter, but I'll be using this MacBook until the day it finally dies. I love the ability to have 2 internal drives on a laptop! G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
We really should do an episode on this... I'm hearing more and more users who have replaced their optical drives with a hard drive, saving the hdd slot for a SSD for OS and programs. G+_Steve Manke
+Michael Dice. I put the optical drive I removed into a similar USB external case. It has come in handy on several machines since removing it from the MacBook Pro.
